Because he says on his Instagram that they're a blend of 3d and digital painting, which means he renders them in 3d and paints over it. Look at the posts he made before he started publishing the Athena comic, he references it not infrequently.

As far as that there's a lot of porn in that vein, uh, go look at some porn I guess. Tumblr is gone, but lots of places still do still images. Comic-format is what you'd be looking for specifically, where they need to bang out a hundred or so servicably photoreal images in short order to tell a story. It's not, like, a secret that people use Poser as an art tool, since that's it's entire original use-case.
