I hear you, but I also agree that it's a really ill-thought out symbolic effort, presumably so that the government can get footage of aid getting through it and call it a military invasion.

Has anyone read the precise location of that barricade? I want to look at the surrounding geography.

The tank-ish anti-imperialist take on Venezuelan lived experience has now

a. furiously defended the food distribution programs that Maduro has been using for years as a blatantly corrupt enrichment scheme, asserting that challenges to it are proof of the true aims of a privatization interest coup

and now also

b. described the bachaqueros reselling toilet paper during a time of hyperinflation and critical food and supply shortages as "getting rich off black market food hoarding and reselling"

basically, their ideological corner on the venezuela political takes map can be labeled "everything is a massively corrupt enrichment scheme, except for actual massively corrupt enrichment schemes, which are fine"

and now, almost symbolically, the venezuelan food aid program's freight boxes are used to physically bar food aid.

I get the feeling that a lot of goons enjoy speaking for "genuine" Venezuelans, who are assuredly dirt poor and lack proper internet access, just to burnish their own comfortably socialist bonafides and score points with their comrades. It reeks of the usual paternalistic BS from a bunch of people who've never experienced the sheer deprivation and terror that countless Venezuelans continue to deal with on a daily basis.

I do wonder what they have to say about Maduro blocking the food aid from entering the country today. Also, it makes me think that Maduro must actually be afraid that some of his military units might actually collect and hand out the food. Yes because there isn't a near infinite constellation of other possible outcomes that also exist. Just these two things. If Maduro truly did care about his people and not just his power, he'd have a fair, open, and scrutinized election as soon as it could be put together.

turns out people let aid workers move around a lot more freely than they let random strangers move around. there was a fun case a few years back where they caught them impersonating Red Cross officials issuing vaccinations. as a result of which, there are segments of the world where "vaccines are part of an American plot to destroy your government" is not an insane conspiracy theory but a cold hard statement of fact. every international aid agency condemned this in the strongest possible terms, but, well. that in one hand, poo poo in the other, see which one weighs more.

Removing all sanctions is a start. The newly implemented US sanctions are going to have more people starve and the US behavior towards Venezuela, particularly in helping engender and advance the crisis, is a reason (there can be multiple) for the starvation.

If you want to reduce suffering, the last thing you want is to completely destabilizing the Venezuelan government and the countries biggest revenue stream. The US policy is literally 'starve them out'.

Venezuela quite clearly needs debt restructuring, humanitarian aid, and international stimulus. However, we live in a world dominated by austerity politics, so global capital is going to inflict as much damage as possible.

That seems pretty difficult to do with a leader who not only seems ineffective at his work, but is only interested in enriching himself and his cronies. You're just pouring more money directly into his pockets. And the people will still starve.

The most ideal solution seems to be having Maduro peacefully step down and call new elections so the Venezuelan people can finally elect its own leader and get the nation back on track, hopefully with zero input from the U.S., et al. But good luck with that.

If you're concerned about the US pulling its normal bullshit in Venezuela, it would seem the prudent thing to do would be to remove any pretext for them to go on a military adventure. Like getting the gangster military dictator thief to gently caress straight off, and then to hold free and fair elections.

Do that and there's no risk of the US doing anything militarily; the fact that a corrupt gently caress like Maduro is in charge is the only thing that could possibly give them a "legitimate" reason to gently caress poo poo up hardcore.
