The builds are a bit outdated, but most of it is still good info. Polearm mastery is really good now, and even your sergeant with banner should get it. Also Nimble is a viable pick for anyone who doesn't have a ton of stamina but has high HP. Take Colossus/Nimble instead of Brawny/Battleforged.

mostly applicable but the details are off here and there especially the weapons sections

the recommended basic build section IS updated but advanced players will build differently, it's written to make it easy for newbies not optimal for experts

Started a new game to play the new expansion, just finished the tutorial mission, and I then get :xcom: right out of the gate. I go to the starting town, first mission I accept is a 1 skull mission for 180 gold reward getting rid of some zombies, "okay, probably just a couple zombies, I could use some more weapons so why not." I say to myself. I get to the mission location, encounter screen says it's a few Wiederganger.

NOOOOOOPE!

It's 10 ten Armored Wiedganger and 4 Geist against my 7 villagers. Shortest campaign I've ever had yet.

Lol for a 1 skull for 180g? Did you have an option to not fight? The ones where you dont have to fight generally give you a much harder fight than the contact implies for a pile of treasure.

This sounds like a bug, I have like 400 hours in the game and I've never once seen enemies in a battle who weren't on the encounter screen. Even if you pulled adds on the campaign map they should be on the encounter screen.

There was one I was using, if you search my recent posts in the thread you'll find it, that had decently good trade and travel with two nice loops and gems in the middle and easy boats. It'd be a few months old now so better ones may have been found.

Could be a way to incorporate the backgrounds of the noble houses a bit more. Let the ones that lost their holdings to Greenskins send you to kill that Warlord, the :evilbuddy: traders hire you for the heist etc.

Also post-Greenskin/Undead crisis Reconquista.

Oh yea. Quests to rebuild towns, or even new settlements (yea, not gonna happen), could make long campaigns more interesting. Escort caravan with building supplies, defend from raiders, etc might be interesting even if you loose money in the short term, as you'd be investing in a new frontier town that could facilitate wilderness exploration. Shitton of things to code I can imagine, but a man can dream :allears: I'd pay a premium for that kind of DLC though.

I'm playing with permanent destruction on now because I'm going to retire soon after the first crisis anyway. Might as well have something to actually fight for in case it's the Undead or Greenskin one.

It's dumb for longer runs unless you have an ideal map and feel like rushing from town to town during a crisis just to keep civilization from collapsing around you but that's where contracts to reclaim and rebuild conquered settlements could come in.

I keep it on for longer runs too. I just keep them fighting until the world goes to poo poo. Haven't really lost that many essential towns, but I would really like to see some rebuilding efforts. Bake that into some of the endings, like Wilderich becoming the mayor, and Jost the Traumatised as the town drunk. Would motivate me to keep going at it.

I may also just like to watch the world burn :sun:

You have to use axes (or some other weapon that can break shields) to break down their shield each turn so that you can do real damage to it. I think axes do bonus damage as well. That and try not to have guys one behind the other so as to avoid AoE. Oh and I think some types of weapons are more likely to spawn those saplings.

Honestly though they don’t do that much damage; I’m guessing you must have been well under geared

Chain mail would be fine - my front liners typically wear some variant of mail till I start getting ready to break out the 2handed weapons when they get to a high enough level. 70 hit points is too low for a frontliner. I aim for 100 for shield tanks (after accounting for colossus) and 80 for 2h and duellists (they don’t get colossus unless I decided to take an otherwise exceptional candidate with low hp). I also put points into health at every level up until they reach the threshold. Remember that acquiring injuries during combat is based on being dealt above a certain percentage of your current health in damage so more hitpoints means lower chance of injury.

Having relatively poor weapons also wouldn’t help - I like to give all my archers a poleaxe so they can switch to breaking shields if they aren’t needed for shooting dudes. And I knew in advance that schrats need axes; so I swapped out some of their regular weapons for axes ahead of the battle as best as I could.

How many days in are you and how many guys in the party? What other stats do they have?

Also it was just one schrat and one hexen right? I haven’t fought the two of them together yet but I did take out a group of 3 schrats at around Day 40.

Dev Blog #113: Company Origins, Part I

Welcome to our first dev blog on the upcoming ‘Warriors of the North’ DLC. One of this expansion’s major features is going to be a little thing called ‘company origins’, and that’s what we’ll be talking about this week and the next. Let’s dive in!

Introduction
Until now, there’s been only a single way of starting out in the world of Battle Brothers. Because the game is otherwise designed for replayability, this is an area we really want to tackle with the upcoming ‘Warriors of the North’ DLC, both to further improve replayability and to accommodate different play styles.

The established way of starting out in the world, your company origin, you likely know well by now: your company is nearly wiped out by a brigand named Hoggart, and it’s up to you to rebuild it. This origin remains available in the game, and it’s a good way to start for new players, but it’ll be just one of many possible origins to choose from. For starters, the free update coming with the DLC will introduce a second origin which immediately drops you into the world without having to deal with Hoggart. It’s reminiscent of Early Access days, and it even has the old introductory text and music that some of you may remember.

The ‘Warriors of the North’ DLC adds greatly to the selection of origins. Each of those comes with a flavor introduction, different starting characters, equipment, resources, and special rules for your campaign. Some origins change the game more than others, but most of them impact it from beginning to end. Because the game is and always will be fundamentally about leading a mercenary company, all origins will ultimately lead to this – but they do add new challenges, accommodate different play styles, and provide roleplaying flavor. If you own the ‘Beasts & Exploration’ DLC, you’ll also get a bonus origin centered around beast slaying.

Let’s take a closer look at two origins that the ‘Warriors of the North’ DLC adds to the game – just keep in mind that things are in active development and might still change!

The Militia
If you prefer to overwhelm your enemies with superior numbers, or even just equal numbers in the late game, but still want a balanced game, then the peasant militia might be for you.

The militia starts not with three companions, but with a full roster of a dozen characters from various civilian backgrounds – daytalers, farmers, butchers, millers, and the like. With these kind of people, you’ll want to rely on numbers, so you’ll be able to field 18 men on the field at once, instead of the usual 12. The downside is that you’ll never be able to hire any noble or high tier combat backgrounds to join your mob of angry peasants. You’ll start with lower renown and crowns, but a home village that idolizes you and gives you great prices.

The Cultists
For a different experience, and some roleplaying flavor, you can also start the game as a wandering cult that worships Davkul.

You’ll start with three cultists, and more cultists will join you without any hiring fee. Cultists can be found more often in any settlement, and they may also flock to you in new events. Your god will demand sacrifices, and you’ll be expected to cull the herd and give lives to Davkul in bloody rituals. All cultists will rejoice upon this gruesome occasion, and Davkul may bestow upon them permanent boons. Of course, anyone not a cultist in your company may have a different reaction to the proceedings. Having a special relation to your god will also make certain late game cultist events much more likely to trigger.

There’ll be plenty more origins to choose from, of course. Join us again next week when we explore them in part two of this dev blog!
That sounds like everything people wanted and more.

Both those sound incredible and I can't wait to see what other options there are. I love the idea of drowning my opponents in waves of peasants in the early game, and in the lategame being able to take 18 heavily-armed and -armoured peasants up against orc armies.

I think it was someone here but I was reading a suggestion where your "company" to start is just one guy with hedge knight level equipment, and you have to consider what pieces of the nice equipment to sell off to get your company started. My comedy suggestion is an origin where you're Hoggart and the jist of the whole game is your raider clan running from/dealing with some random merc company called "Battle Brothers" who have a grudge against you for some reason...
