I am interested in hearing more grunge. I am re-experiencing my old love pro wrestling from the 80s and 90s and it inspired me to learn more about some music.. I only really know about Nirvana because of course I heard their big hits back when I listened to the radio. Can anybody here recommend bands and albums? Also I tend to like female vocalists so if there are any grunge bands you'd recommend with one that be cool. Thank you.

Grunge was like six bands, of which Nirvana was the best and Mudhoney the other good one. Just look at Wikipedia. Listen to L7 and Breeders, they have female singers

Veruca Salt was actually pretty decent, although it doesn't hurt that they bit off the Breeders (who own) pretty hard. Hole never really did much for me, but they also fit the bill- Live Through This is their best album.

Best lesser-known grunge-y albums: Local H - As Good As Dead Veruca Salt - American Thighs (female fronted, this is a fantastic album) Hole - Live Through This (Kurt Kobain's wife's group, album has been long rumored / assumed to be largely written by Kurt Kobain) Soundgarden - Superunknown (not actually lesser known but you didn't mention them so I'll include it) Stone Temple Pilots - Core (again, not lesser known and got flak for being a bit derivative of Pearl Jam but some killer tunes) Pearl Jam - 10 (not lesser known) Alice in Chains - Dirt (grunge-ish, though hardcore fans of the band will riot if you say that to them) Great non-grunge albums from the same era: Beck - Mellow Gold Faith No More - Angel Dust (arguably the best early 90s rock album) Pixies - Surfer Rosa (direct predecessor to Nirvana) My Bloody Valentine - Loveless Tool - Opiate, Undertow Bikini Kill and Babes in Toyland - female bands in the riot grrl genre. Distant cousin to grunge? Listen to the track Bruise Violet and you'll know right away if you're into this style Other artists to look into: Dinosaur Jr Melvins Sonic Youth Mudhoney Cracker ~SpOoKy fact~ There are 5 bands that were primarily associated with the grunge movement in popular culture -- Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Stone Temple Pilots. Of those, 4 of their lead singers died either due to drug ODs or suicide. regulargonzalez fucked around with this message at 15:39 on Feb 9, 2019 |

Grunge was really more of a scene than a music genre so the artists can get pretty dissimilar but here it goes. The rest of the Big Four: Soundgarden - Superunknown; Badmotorfinger Pearl Jam - Ten; Vs. Alice In Chains - Dirt; Jar of Flies EP Other notable names: Temple of the Dog - Temple of the Dog (supergroup of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden) Mother Love Bone - Apple (featured members of Pearl Jam) Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early Singles Mad Season - Above (supergroup of Alice In Chains and Screaming Trees) Good bands that only grunge obsessives care about : Tad - 8-way Santa Skin Yard - 1000 Smiling Knuckles Malfunkshun - Return to Olympus There isn’t a lot of female fronted stuff that’s considered part of the grunge scene, but a lot of riot grrrl had a similar sound to what was coming out of grunge and has the same ties to the Pacific Northwest. Try these bands out: Babes in Toyland - Fontanelle Team Dresch - Personal Best Bikini Kill - Pussy Whipped

I don't know if the Melvins really count as grunge, but they had a pretty big influence on the Seattle scene around that time.

If I know literally NOTHING about electronic music, but I really like Witch House (Glass Teeth, Ritualz, Master Suspiria Vision), where do I go from there? I really like the dark, psychedelic sounds. Less into the poppier side. EDIT: I realized I phrased that poorly, I'm looking for similar genres, not more witch house artists. Kvlt! fucked around with this message at 04:20 on Feb 11, 2019 |

Oneohtrix point never would probably be my default suggestion for that kind of thing, esp this album and r plus seven https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WejD5fPTBE vaporwave was the genre the always online dorks listened to when witch house became uncool. i haven't listened to much of that besides blank banshee though https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dm0718TRRQA (epilepsy warning probably) obviously opn also made that eccojams album that basically spawned vaporwave altogether, but idk if it has the sound you're looking for. check it out i suppose Also just thought of blanck mass. no idea what genre to put him in but w/e. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIwuRIclivM Hooplah fucked around with this message at 09:02 on Feb 11, 2019 |

I really like the dark, psychedelic sounds. Less into the poppier side. Witch House was such a hodgepodge of a genre that it makes this question kinda hard to answer, but in addition to what's already been suggested I think you might be interested in combing through older southern rap tapes, which a lot of Witch House artists copped heavily from (specifically thinking of SALEM, White Ring, early Horse MacGyver when he was still calling himself ▲▲▲ or whatever, etc). The production for that era is so weird and dark, it's awesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYBLyOlwD6Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YS_yA2elbS0 I think no one nails the dark psychedelic rap vibe better than Lil Noid's Binghampton N****s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UrRurRZBe4&t=1280s You might also get a kick out of some contemporary juke music. Definitely more up-tempo than Witch House, but some producers use darker psychedelic sounds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgL0DhJTdS8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzOG_v0ituY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eca5fn7-aik There's also a lot of of "Synthwave" in Witch House. It's not a genre I'm super familiar with but here's a rec or two for that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lw1MrMHQ9o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fzku_5WB5yE (might be too poppy) Lastly, I'm not really sure what you'd call Dolphins Into the Future (Ambient? I guess?), but back when I was listening to Witch House a lot I found myself playing their 2009 album ...On Sea-Faring Isolation a lot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLZsSJVkfj8

Which albums? I was gonna ask about non-NS psych BM bands, because my initial research found Oranssi Pazuzu and Nachtmystium, but apparently the latter has NS ties and their singer's a dirtbag (I didn't wanna bring this up in the metal thread because it seems nazis come up every 5 pages, but I'm sympathetic to not wanting to give money to nazis)

Blake Judd is a scam artist but I've never heard of him having NS ties. I would start with Valonielu for OP and Oi Magoi for HSN. In a Flesh Aquarium is Unexpect at their wackiest. maudlin of the Well's peak is Bath, which is one of my favorite albums ever. Again, those two bands are not sonically similar to Sigh, they just throw everything at the wall like them (motW is more tasteful about it).

Everyone who considers themselves sonically adventurous should listen to Earth 2 at some point, but that's pretty much the worst starting point. I haven't really kept up with them, but unless they've made drastic changes in their progression, I'd say reverse chronological order is the best way to go. I feel like have to throw in a caveat that drone metal isn't really something you'd ever call accessible, but over time the songs have gotten shorter and more like actual music rather than a pure wall of sound.

Reverse chronological order doesn't really make sense because their last few records, while decent, have tended to retread sounds from their earlier releases. Hex is the obvious choice(and basically if you like that one you'll like all the later material anyway).

Thanks for the responses everyone! If I might tap the well again, any recommended concept albums in the indie rock sphere? Specifically those with an emphasis on telling or suggesting a story through the lyrics and sound. I'm thinking like Pink Floyd's The Wall, Phish's The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday, and Dear Hunter's Acts series.
