Just in case people weren't aware, the best description of Japanese work I read was someone who described it as Japanese employers give their employees social status directly, so the work itself is more important than the money it pays. The kids I taught had a jam-packed social calendar. Even in elementary school, kids typically had school-after-school. Not as a punishment, quite the opposite, because they really needed to squeeze every last grade out. There are classes for how to do exams. They spend twice as long learning their own language as most other countries (because Japanese is a hodgepodge, with Chinese characters mutated and duct-taped to a language that wasn't really meant to use them and historically didn't have its own independent writing system, because the old people who were literate were aristocrats who were expected to dabble in Chinese anyway), then there are social clubs in the evening...they legit have no "free time" to speak of. Then when you get in the workforce you're expected to get to work before your direct boss/supervisor does and leave after he does, and they have the same expectation with their own bosses...and then you're expected to go out drinking with all your co-workers every day. One of the funner side effects of this is that, since the man was traditionally never home, Japan actually has one of the highest divorce rates in the world for retirees, because it turns out they don't know each-other anymore. See, Japanese universities are so difficult to get into that the point of pride is getting into it at all, like I almost think you could get away with dropping out immediately as long as you actually get in, since the "getting in" is your street cred for jobs and the like. The entrance exams are crazy-hard and they have classes dedicated just to learning stuff for those exams. All entrance exams for the year are typically on the same day so you have to strategize which uni you take a chance on attempting to apply with. If you fail, you become known as a "ronin" because you're doing gently caress-all until you get another go at the entrance exams (a ronin is looked at kind of like a NEET in the Western world). This applies a lot of pressure to people. Brain-breaking amounts, in fact. So if someone with strict parents fails to get in their brain might go "well I guess I don't fit into society, so I'll shut myself off from society" and do just that, with the really terrible parents having no real idea on what to do and, desperate to maintain social standing, ignoring the problem any way they can (some families have renovated their property around the hikikomori's room so the arrangement works better). Some hikikomori are also weirdly successful by doing work online that doesn't require much in the way of interacting with people directly (e.g. stock market stuff).
