Maybe Princess Tutu would be the closest?

Princess Tutu looks interesting. In what ways is it similar to Utena? Can you give a hint as to what sort of themes it covers?

Fairy tales vs reality, the nature of stories, great characters and their development, a completely bizarre sense of humor... it's more dreamlike than Utena but in a good way.

His work on Sailor Moon is as good visually and is as funny but it's mostly a monster of the week show. It's still very, very good, especially the third season, but.

Penguindrum is okay. Revue Starlight is based on the same japanese theater troupe and the director of it is sort of a protege of Ikuhara's, but the story's actually about the Takarazuka Revue and not just using it as a visual metaphor, and the story's also mostly episodic/focused on individual characters, and its quality varies somewhat from episode to episode, with one character arc in the middle being the highlight by a mile. It's also mostly about storytelling and acting and not really about gender or anything. It's only 13 episodes though so it might be worth checking out, it is very interesting visually.

Yuri Kuma kind of sucks. Doesn't help that it's trying to be explicitly about lesbianism but instead of letting the character designer, an actual lesbian who's done tons of manga about lesbians, also write it, Ikuhara just decided to handle the writing himself and it mostly winds up meandering and also ripping off twin peaks visually at every possible chance. The manga version by the character designer is decent, though.

Penguin Drum is pretty solid (especially the first half) but it's like if Utena ended in the middle of the final arc.

You've missed half of it; It is a full two-cour show, and nosedives straight into pure misery-porn for the second cour.

It absolute is past the halfway point. It goes out of its way to make every goddamn element of the show as bleak and miserable as possible.

Endorph

That isn't what misery porn is, though. The term 'misery porn' applies to works that do that for literally no other reason than its own sake. Whether or not Penguindrum is executing it well, it's clearly reaching for a point with that stuff.

Penguindrum is not perfect by any means, but I kinda liked a few of the points/aesop it was trying to make, even if it was as subtle as a brick to the face. I actually liked it more than Utena, but after taking the Revolutionary Girl's escapades for a spin once more, I'm not as certain anymore.

I cannot be objective about old Sailor Moon because, along with Slam Dunk and Magic Knight Rayearth, it's one of my favorite shows from my wee days in the 90's, and Araceli de León's portrayal of Makoto/Lita Kino was for the longest time one of my favorites. :rip:

I decided to watch Princess Tutu purely based on this AMV. Kind of spoilerific for specific events, but doesn't give any context for them.

Also, seconding that Penguindrum is not misery porn. It definitely lowers the characters into their own personal hell in the second half, but it isn't for nothing. And it does a good job bringing them back out by the end.

Yeah, I'm kinda iffy on Internet lists, that's why I decided to ask around. I only ever hear people talk about the two I mentioned tho, so...

I actually haven't watched Inazuma Eleven, it looks like some weird Beyblade poo poo but with soccer instead. Is it actually, like, decent?

There's one called Goal Field Hunter/Goleadores that ran for like 40 episodes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq1UmnZESco

I'm unaware if it's in any streaming services, but one thing that I remember quite well even to this day is another friend back in my old town describing it as thus: "Imagine having the choice to follow either Oliver Atom or Steve Hyuuga (Tsubasa and Kojiro's LatAm dub names, respectively): if you want Oliver, go with Super Campeones. If you want Steve, go with Goleadores".

The statement kinda doesn't hold, since Captain Tsubasa/Super Campeones does give its fair share of the limelight to Steve/Kojiro past the initial Shizuoka arc, but I remember the show nonetheless because, while Tsubasa is memorable enough as an MC, Hikaru from Goal Field Hunter/Goleadores does have a bit more of a personality.

Hah, in Brazil it's Oliver Tsubasa, somehow Hyuga kept his name tho. I'm kinda surprised there was a similar anime about soccer that didn't air here, because I never heard of it until now. If I can find it anywhere I might check it out.

Kojiro's arc is kinda depressing in the later arcs, which kinda sucks. I like the unreasonably buff elementary school boy.

Yeah, the dub name changes are kinda all out of whack across regions. I remember Taro went from "Tom Baker" (which was the original dub name in most of Europe) in the o.g. season to "Tom Misaki" after middle-school and throughout Captain Tsubasa J.

The funny thing with regards to the "unreasonably buff 6th grader" look is that it's only kinda slightly exaggerated, since dude does work like 4 jobs (paperboy, storehouse clean-up, and I think construction work?), and since he's picking stuff up repeatedly, it sorta makes sense that he'd be as toned as he is.

A Place Further Than The Universe (same writer as the Euphonium anime, a bit comedic in spots but it's very very dialogue and character focused and the banter's really good)

Bloom into You (hey look its that writer, again, very deliberately paced romance anime, good side characters, complex relationship dynamics, author of the original manga outright said she was inspired by euphonium)

Hyouka (teens solve minor mysteries, but its mostly about the weird distance between people who care about each other and how people get into their own heads, lots of banter and playing off each other's personalities, has the best school festival arc in anime)

It isn't like, the only thing she was inspired by, but essentially she just said that she really liked Kumiko and Reina's relationship and how they interacted, and tried to base some of the 'distance' between her characers on that. I believe she was talking about the novels, since Bloom into You had already started by the time Eupho's anime started airing, but she could have meant that it was a continuing inspiration for her as the story developed. Either way, she was mostly just talking about it in the context of being happy that the Eupho anime writer was working on the anime of her work.

also check out Sayo Yamamoto's work in general
