it'll be like the switch from ie to chrome. a bunch of people will care and switch away, a bunch won't and will stay that group will slowly dwindle from attrition without some reason for people to return. there are only 3 groups of browser users. nerds who use a bunch of extensions and will get pissed off with a move like this, people who use a few things like ad blocking and can easily move away if it stops working, and people who use what ever the first two groups tell them to use.

is there a way to make firefox's tabs shrink down to tiny dots like chrome's do when you have 100 of them?

i like everything about firefox except that stupid loving tab bar that requires you to scroll horizontally if you have more than 10 tabs or whatever. nothing should ever scroll horizontally.

firefox adopted the chrome style of incredibly limited pre-defined apis for extensions, so tab management extensions are pretty busted

you could try treestyletabs and see if you don't hate it

they forgot the part of the strategy where you break all the standards so poo poo only works on your dominant browser making it a pain in the rear end to switch. can't even do their evil properly

Chome capitulated for now: https://www.zdnet.com/article/google-backtracks-on-chrome-modifications-that-would-have-crippled-ad-blockers/

quote:

Their study --which analyzed the network performance of ad blockers such as uBlock Origin, Adblock Plus, Brave, DuckDuckGo and Cliqz'z Ghostery-- found sub-millisecond median decision times per request, showing quite the opposite of what the Chrome team claimed.

Following the publication of this study, Google engineers made it official on a Google Groups posting hours later, announcing a relaxation of the Manifest V3 changes that would have impacted ad blockers.

the best solution i've found is setting browser.tabs.tabMinWidth to something small. I use 30 and still have to scroll once in a while, but its a shitload better than the default.

i only have like 12 tabs open right now but i discovered another thing i can't stand about firefox, which is that it doesn't do smooth touchscreen zooming the way chrome does. i also need that feature. oh well.

ironically, edge does p much everything i want except having an imgur upload extension but edge is like...ew. that blue e logo. gross

i'm using a thinkpad that flips backwards because i draw things with it. i need the smooth zoom because i have to zoom in on things on the screen when teaching.

anyway you can just do the pinch zoom gesture on the touchpad and it does the same smooth zooming in chrome and edge. firefox's version is extremely laggy and choppy. it's poo poo

my thinkpad has a "retina" display and three regular usb ports and two usb-c and a full size hdmi and a headphone port and a microsd slot and a six-row keyboard with more than 0.2mm of travel and it's exactly the same thickness and weight as a current 15" mbp.

oh and it has an i7 that doesn't autothrottle under full load and it cost $1200.

Metal is a terrible material for a laptop. It's not pleasant to touch, it gets cold or hot easily and it dents or bends really easily.

Better than the plastic in Thinkpads. The unit I have been blessed with visibly bends when typing on, and recently when trying to use as an actual laptop also bends its base causing the trackpad to disconnect, lol.

It means this probably isn't a regular problem this laptop model has, but symptom of a bigger underlying problem. A bit of flex is 100% normal with plastic cases.
