Sounds like O&O AppBuster came out at the right time, looks to be just a gui version of powershell scripts so nothing revolutionary, but a nice tool oriented for those who like to tweak but don't possess the skills to do it manually. Will probably add this to the gaint list of things I always run on every major Windows update.

Edit: Just to be clear I've had no issues with my PC and consider it solid, the bugs I've encountered are obvious bugs that the mass majority of people encounter from Windows :regd11: like Task Manager being hosed when 1809 hit and CPU spiking doing context menu spam.

I think you can actually build a little USB stick with a .ppkg file that only instructs Windows to basically kill all the OEM pack in garbage during the OOBE setup. Stick the drive in, acknowledge the prompt, and the machine basically self-cleans.

I kept the OEM install on an HP laptop that I gave to my mother in law, I kept it only because it came with an OEM copy of PowerDVD. When I tried watching a DVD on the laptop with VLC it stuttered and chugged along, but PowerDVD was smooth, so I actually really wanted that program. It took ages to decrapify the installation, is there any other way to keep the OEM copy of PowerDVD and do a fresh install on that laptop? I tried magic jelly bean to see if it could find any sort of key but it found nothing.

My first instinct is to try MPC-HC, but if that doesn't work you could always get PowerDVD another way

A third/more modern solution is to rip those DVDs and just make mp4s/mkvs of whatever movies and play those

Search the Store for MPEG-2 Video Extensions and Web Media Extensions, both by Microsoft, that cleared up a bunch of playback issues I was having.

Your best bet is probably either MPC-HC or checking the VLC settings for whether hardware acceleration is enabled.

It doesn't really matter because you aren't looking at the osd 99% of the time and you don't actually have to interact with it in any way.

mpv doesn't really have a GUI, that's a separate thing: https://www.smplayer.info/en/mpv

i vastly prefer the no bullshit approach of "open file, watch file" though, but i already know all the shortcuts since i've been using mplayer since like 2000

Thanks for pointing this out. I opened it and might update it if I hear back from either vendor. EAC was really quick to reply and ask for my dump so they could take a look. Haven’t heard from BattlEye yet.

Yup, third-party software that is notorious for doing exceedingly nonstandard and system-hostile things, and whose publishers are having trouble dealing with Microsoft in good faith, are completely and utterly Microsoft's fault and no one else's. Uh huh.

(Assuming the third-party is the anti-cheat people)

The biggest problem Microsoft has ever had with compatibility is that unfortunately that's not how it would work. Consumers would see that their game worked fine before the update and doesn't now. Game developers would tell their users to avoid this update. Idiots would post all kinds of nonsense about how Microsoft is breaking their game. They're not as willing as Apple is to just tell people to get new versions from their vendors.

I think it's partially their own fault though because they're too political about it and refuse to say who it is. I say name and shame each and every time, loudly. Keep a public scoreboard of how many times each vendor has caused this kind of nonsense and officially recommend against anyone at the top of the list. Make it so the world actually knows who's at fault and why. lovely vendors won't change until they actually see it costing them money.

In a case like this where a bad driver is causing system-wide crashes, the update should disable the driver and pop up a dialog explicitly stating what was disabled and why, then telling them to get a new version that doesn't suck from $vendor if they want it to work again. Or I guess if they want to be nice about it and the update isn't security-critical they could prompt before.

And then the next thing you know that vendor makes their poo poo work on other platforms. The Microsoft nightmare.
