You'd think people would be happy when a hate crime didn't actually happen instead of braying and screaming for black blood. Spicy. Given that violent attacks on LBGT people (especially minorities) are real and increasing, maybe people just don't relish any incident that moves the American public further from "believe the victim because they're telling the truth 99.9% of the time", making the problem harder to address. But no, you found us out, we all just lust for hate crimes.

HootTheOwl posted:"It would be better if false hate crimes were perpetrated at a higher rate" is one nuclear take. If it was faked (and I take no position on it) then it really did a great disservice to victims everywhere. Lots of people want to believe we live in a society where hate crimes don't happen, and so one high profile fake really resonates with people who want to immediately disbelieve victims. If it was faked (again I take no position on it) the smug satisfaction felt by those whose first instinct is always doubt will only make them more callous to victims in the future. So no matter what happens it's a really sad outcome.

Is this actually accurate or important. Idk anything about campaign finance enforcement but I feel like if he uncovered evidence of a no-poo poo crime he'd be reporting it to the FEC not blogging it like "she's totally a criminal you guys but the biased media is covering it up" as if WaPo isn't constantly on her rear end for anything and everything waiting for her to mispronounce a word so they can publish a dozen "aoc is CANCELED" op-eds VitalSigns fucked around with this message at 19:52 on Feb 20, 2019 |

Trump has been using his various PACs to make it rain on friends and loyal henchmen who were forced to leave the white house or couldn't get a job. The argument here is maybe its unethical or hypocritical maybe, if AOC is cultivating this pure image as a crusader against political corruption. That might be a stretch especially if her boyfriend is actually legit qualified for the job, and we don't even know if its even true or not.

Beyond that I know literally nothing about it as well!

Apparently AOC's boyfriend was allegedly paid a grand total of roughly $7,000 or so for working on both the campaign and for the PAC, most of it in 2017 when her campaign was in debt and before she won her primary. Doesn't seem like a big deal at all.

Yeah, even if you grant every allegation as an agreed fact and read it in the worst light possible, its definitely not illegal, nor is it really unreasonable. You aren't going to be able to hire skilled staff for a seemingly longshot no-hope primary campaign, and if you are lucky enough to have friends and family putting in a lot of hours helping you, there's nothing wrong with going into debt to reimburse them. Of course, people might ask what you would have done with that debt if you lost, but she won.

My point isn't about what it says, because there's no real reason to engage with what it says when we know it's bad faith and designed (however well or poorly) to abuse our willingness to process its claims.
