I was not a fan of the tone shifts in The Wailing. It just felt all over place. While that can work at times, it just made the movie feel more like 3.5 hours long. I don't think it is bad, but I found it nowhere close to the hype. When it comes to Korean horror, I would take something like I Saw the Devil or Thirst over it.

You named two of the most critically acclaimed Korean films of the past 20 years though, it's really not controversial to think those are better than The Wailing.

I'd think a Detective would have seen more squeamish stuff... but yeah that whole story is loving bonkers. I had no idea Jordan Peele was involved in the film though. Be sure to watch John Bobbitt's porn flick "John Bobbitt Uncut" on pornhub! nah don't

I'm on episode 2 now. Looking at some of the men interviewed for this documentary, John's friends and neighbors. ...is it still 2007 in Virginia? Also, Aubrey Plaza would have played Lorena if this was an I, Tonya-esque biopic.

i'm looking for a horror movie on netflix - with a supernatural monster - that isn't a zombie or a ghost or some other bullshit that could be accomplished by putting an extra in make-up - recent-ish - not complete trash - leaning more towards serious than horror-comedy Something like The Ritual, Borderlands / Final Prayer, Spring, or even the rubber-suit antics of something like The Monster would qualify, but I've seen all of those.

You've seen most of the go-to suggestions, like when I read the description of what you wanted The Ritual was my first thought. What about The Void? Also, it doesn't exactly fit all your criteria but if you haven't seen it, why not watch the best found footage horror movie of all time, As Above, So Below?

david_a posted:They don’t have a lot of monster movies, much to my dismay (maybe there’s just less out there than I realize). Horror has always been a low risk/high reward business, so many famous horror producers(Corman, HGL, Cunningham, etc.) got into it because they could make a potential money making film without having to go into foreclosure on their house. So for that reason ghosts and human slashers are usually featured the most in the genre overall. Designing a proper monster and then shooting it well so that it doesn't look goofy can be an expensive proposition.

Does it need to be on Netflix? There's Monsters from 2010, though I guess it's extraterrestrial, not supernatural. It's on Hulu.

Yeah, but the observational nature of it, and sugar pilled with a dose of conspiracy about the government sells it. It kinda poisons any chance of discourse surrounding it for them. Hell, it's easier to do today than it was in ancient Greece. Buy a length of PVC tubing, check the sun's shadow at noon, the next day drive an hour due North and check the shadow, and the day after that drive due South. Three days to find out once and for all of the Earth is flat.

I'd have preferred it if it had been a jumping off point to talk about conspiracy theorists in general. They only offer a smattering of explanation as to why these people fall down these rabbit holes, and barely touch on how conspiracy theorists destroy their own lives and descend into their own bubble because they reject (or are rejected by) those who disagree with them. But at least they get a few solid self-owns in there. Like the "engineer" who spent $20,000 on a gyroscope to prove the earth wasn't rotating, got the exact opposite of the results he wanted, so has reduced himself to retrying the experiment by encasing the gyroscope in a bismuth container (?!?).
