He laughed and bought me another beer and we talked about Pokemon and nerd poo poo for 15 minutes.

I met the entire Arlington County board back when I lived there. Had a great talk + beer with Katie Cristol and told her I was sorry I voted for her primary opponent instead of her as she really impressed me as a councilmember.

Lee Carter is one of the only non-lovely politicians I have heard "I could have a beer with him." The only difference is when you have a drink with Lee Carter, you get drunk and start a socialist revolution.

That is really cool. I am trying to get more exposure to my city councilors because I am considering targeting one in the future to take their seat. Trying to find the most lovely person to primary :P

Oregon's Secretary of State Dennis Richardson just died. He was the first Republican to win statewide office in decades.

It will be interesting to see who Kate Brown appoints to replace him.

By state law another Republican. By her own statement somebody who will not run for re-election (which was the same rule she applied when replacing the last set of state vacancy after she got elevated to governor when Kitz resigned).

Also for the curious Sec of State is essentially the same as Lt. Governor in other states.

Ugh, I didn't know about that law.

I can't believe I voted for Richardson, especially after his gubernatorial run, but his opponent seemed awful. And you know what? Richardson would have been a terrible governor but I have no complaints about his SoS tenure. I suspect a Republican replacement won't be nearly as competent.

Avakian was a better choice but local media went super loving hard against him and as portraying D Rich as a sensible elder statesman. I think everyone wanted desperately to get a Republican elected for a variety of reasons. Richardson wasn’t terrible - but a lot of that had to do with the powers and responsibilities of the position. He would have been a nightmare if he became governor.

Edit: But Kate isn’t going to appoint a nut job. Plus I just learned that an appointed SoS isn’t in line for becoming governor (so if something happens to Kate it jumps to the state treasurer who’s an alright fella as far as I can tell). Given everything I’m guessing it’s going to be some quiet moderate Republican none of us have ever heard of who’s looking to get out of politics anyway and wants a nice line on their resume as an ego thing.

Y'know, I felt the same way about our last SoS in Colorado, Wayne Williams. Didn't really know much about his politics or whatnot but I've never had anything close to an issue with voting in this state. I still voted for the Democrat last year (who went on to win :woop:) because gently caress Republicans on principle, but I probably wouldn't have been concerned at all if Williams had won re-election.

Why bother losing another Senate run when you could be vp instead? Most of the people running for president don't think they are going to win, they want to raise their profile for a cabinet position.

I sincerely hope Obama or Harry Reid or someone is taping this poll to his eyeballs because being in a tie 18 months out is an insanely good result. Dude probably will win the race if he enters but noooo instead he's considering a quixotic presidential run. He was popular because he had a chance at beating Ted Cruz, not because people liked his policies.

centrism is a hell of a drug

The best fact about John Hickenlooper is that he is mentioned in the Kurt Vonnegut novel Timequake (Vonnegut was in a fraternity with Hickenlooper’s father, and the novel depicts Vonnegut describing fraternity rituals to Hickenlooper).

they're already short-staffed with about 15% of positions unfilled (and obviously other people pulling double or triple duty to cover those jobs), so this will just make things worse, which of course is the plan so they can justify privatizing the entire thing

I got a candidate for Rockville MD city council that wants to start some civilian oversight boards for the police dept as a plank of his platform. I recall there being talk of NC doing something like that and other cities too. Does anyone have any data on hand about how effective they are? Or any good policy wonk leads I can hunt down?

Nobody super high-profile that I can think of; two of the three announced Dems gunning for Gardner's spot are fantastic but have no name recognition outside of people super plugged into local politics, and the third announced candidate - Mike Johnston - has name recognition from his run for CO-GOV last year but isn't quite as steller as the other two (though still better, imo, than your standard DNC blue dog type).

I guess Diana DeGette might be able to mount a credible run for Senate ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

also because there was no clear better person to take over and if all 3 resigned the GOP would get control of the state despite losing the governor's election by 9 points.

had that coin flipped the other way back in December of 2017 things might've been different though as the House speaker wouldn't have been a Republican.

Likewise even if Franken was in a red state, he should’ve been forced to resign.

Ultimately, they learned the truth about politics that the Republican Party has known for a long time: you don't have to do anything you can't be forced to do, assuming you can squelch or lack entirely your sense of shame. Should makes absolutely zero difference without the capacity to enforce it.
