Sent Carter's way. Hope he gets re-elected in November and he (and others like Danica Roehm) inspire more left-leaning people to run and vote.

Lee Carter is one of the only non-lovely politicians I have heard "I could have a beer with him." The only difference is when you have a drink with Lee Carter, you get drunk and start a socialist revolution.axeil posted:I met the entire Arlington County board back when I lived there. Oregon's Secretary of State Dennis Richardson just died. He was the first Republican to win statewide office in decades. It will be interesting to see who Kate Brown appoints to replace him.

By her own statement somebody who will not run for re-election (which was the same rule she applied when replacing the last set of state vacancy after she got elevated to governor when Kitz resigned). Also for the curious Sec of State is essentially the same as Lt. Governor in other states.

Ugh, I didn't know about that law. I can't believe I voted for Richardson, especially after his gubernatorial run, but his opponent seemed awful. And you know what? Richardson would have been a terrible governor but I have no complaints about his SoS tenure. I suspect a Republican replacement won't be nearly as competent.

I think everyone wanted desperately to get a Republican elected for a variety of reasons. Richardson wasn’t terrible - but a lot of that had to do with the powers and responsibilities of the position. He would have been a nightmare if he became governor. Edit: But Kate isn’t going to appoint a nut job. Plus I just learned that an appointed SoS isn’t in line for becoming governor (so if something happens to Kate it jumps to the state treasurer who’s an alright fella as far as I can tell). Given everything I’m guessing it’s going to be some quiet moderate Republican none of us have ever heard of who’s looking to get out of politics anyway and wants a nice line on their resume as an ego thing. Y'know, I felt the same way about our last SoS in Colorado, Wayne Williams. Didn't really know much about his politics or whatnot but I've never had anything close to an issue with voting in this state. I still voted for the Democrat last year (who went on to win ) because gently caress Republicans on principle, but I probably wouldn't have been concerned at all if Williams had won re-election.

Hickenlooper, former CO gov, is jumping into the 2020 ring. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/03/04/politics/john-hickenlooper-presidential-campaign/index.html Dude is basically a republican, he catered to the rich chuds in the mountains more than anyone. Dude probably will win the race if he enters but noooo instead he's considering a quixotic presidential run. The best fact about John Hickenlooper is that he is mentioned in the Kurt Vonnegut novel Timequake (Vonnegut was in a fraternity with Hickenlooper’s father, and the novel depicts Vonnegut describing fraternity rituals to Hickenlooper).

they're already short-staffed with about 15% of positions unfilled (and obviously other people pulling double or triple duty to cover those jobs), so this will just make things worse, which of course is the plan so they can justify privatizing the entire thing

I got a candidate for Rockville MD city council that wants to start some civilian oversight boards for the police dept as a plank of his platform. I recall there being talk of NC doing something like that and other cities too. Does anyone have any data on hand about how effective they are? Or any good policy wonk leads I can hunt down?

Not everyday we get in this thread, but our Senate Majority Leader stepped down today. He did it with class, though. The problem is, we only get a few months of legislature every two years, and this is going to slow things down some.

Nobody super high-profile that I can think of; two of the three announced Dems gunning for Gardner's spot are fantastic but have no name recognition outside of people super plugged into local politics, and the third announced candidate - Mike Johnston - has name recognition from his run for CO-GOV last year but isn't quite as steller as the other two (though still better, imo, than your standard DNC blue dog type). I guess Diana DeGette might be able to mount a credible run for Senate ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
