Mayor Pete isn't running for President, he's running for Vice President. He has no other possible platforms to advance to due to his state. As much as it would be cool and good for him to get the big chair, I think he'll have to settle for the runner up prize unless he can get some serious support. Can you imagine how awkward Pence would be in the VP debate?

I was a major Bernie backer in 2015, but I really want him to be running this time only to shift the conversation further to the left and to maybe be handed the VP slot. I hope that's his thinking, but even if it is he has to at least appear to be seriously competing. Of course, the damage done to the economy by the GOP in the last few years will catch up with us right around 2021 and the ill-informed and inattentive voting public will blame the Democrat who gets stuck footing the bill.

I don't disagree with any of this, empathy and a realistic understanding of how much wealth is concentrated in the world go a long way toward being head and shoulders above the  electable candidates. It's not his fault time is time and age is age, but it's pretty sad and disappointing that there simply aren't as many compelling candidates under 40 as there should be. 9/11 happened when I was 17, had I not hosed off in college the first time around I would have hit professional life in 2006-2007 in the best of circumstances and probably gotten shellacked by the 2008 crash. People a few years older would probably have been even worse off, having gotten a couple years deeper into the american delusion of being house-poor, and people a few years younger would have basically graduated college with scarce job prospects. By now you should have had several years of people who called bullshit on basically everything and gotten into politics to fix things, and someone like Buttigieg wouldn't be some novelty but one of several properly representative candidates who know things are hosed up because they've been dealing with it their entire adult lives. A hostile democratic party is barely half the problem though, 2008 was supposed to be Hillary's coronation but instead Obama got the nomination because he touched on a lot of those festering inequities in his speeches and made a point to actively court people who'd have been in that 18-29 age group back then, which is why I think there's this subtle divide between older millennials and younger ones. People who'd been eligible to vote and who got active in their state party's caucus or primary system actually saw their efforts and organization turn into power, but people a little younger never did. Going through life being told you have no political agency but also not having anything like the 2008 primary to refute that kind of breeds apathy, which in turn basically trues the lie - political agency doesn't get granted to you upon your 18th birthday, you have to literally go out and cancel out the votes of the boomer bastards telling you their poo poo doesn't stink and it's actually you who smells like poo poo. So, naturally, 2010 doomed the political aspirations of a generation because after that the entire discussion turned defensive and the right wing of the Democratic party started consolidating power by telling everyone they had to court the chuds because the kids would never vote. And why would they? They weren't old enough to actually see how the GOP when given power were blood-chugging sociopaths hell-bent on selling the planet out for a fraction of a percent of quarterly GDP, to know that in the absence of all other options, the GOP must not be allowed back into power, all that jazz, and nobody ever tried to engage them on their turf to actually make that case. It fell somewhere between voters taking the 2009 supermajority for granted and the Dems taking it for granted that everyone knew the GOP was a criminal syndicate looking to find a way to turn children into hard cash and bond yields. Along comes the DSA like they're the riders of rohan and nobody has ever tried working over a state party from the ground up before. They're sort of right, since it happened in '06 and '08 but that's a generational difference in electoral politics, and as long as they're kicking the doors in I certainly don't mind if they act like they're the first to discover canvassing. E: broke it up a bit for clarity since I had this premonition of a big slapfight happening because I said democrats being hostile to outsiders isn't the only problem.
