AceOfFlames posted:Really? I thought it was much higher. Sorry for the privileged ranting. Posting here because you might see it and I don't have pm. I am not Dutch but I live here for a decade. As a deluxe immigrant aka expat there is something you need to consider when interacting with the help services. The Dutch health experience differs from the surrounding countries in two aspects. First, there is an expectation that patients will just 'tough out' mild ailments. This is one of the reasons why the Dutch prescribe far less medication than in other countries. If it can be healed by staying in bed for a long time even if you're uncomfortable, the GP will resist prescribing medication if it might have any sort of side effects. The second is that patients are expected to be very autonomous. When I go to my GP one of the sometimes dumb sounding questions they ask is: "Well, what would *you* want to do about this?". If you think that you are not being taken seriously or that you want to pursue a particular treatment you really have to spell it out. In other countries the doctors tell you what you need and are much quicker in giving you (expensive) full services, here you kind of have to ask for it. This is something that international students need explained when they come for a year or two. Anectode time: a very nice lady I know well comes from Latvia and worked at my old employer for several years. Some time she had a cold that just didn't go away. She went to the GP and he told her to take it slow and it'd go away. Not being Dutch, she does not question the doctor and does what he says. Cold doesn't go away, doctor tells her to rest, she does what the doctor says. End result: on a vacation she falls unconscious and is hospitalised. Turns out she had pneumonia all the time and now has developed asthma as a result of the prolonged disease. She's considering to sue the practice. In all fairness, the practice apparently has had a bad reputation already y but her not being assertive enough didn't help. Moral of the story: unless compared in some contexts to Germans, the Dutch are very direct in stating what they think and need. So when you go to the doctor do not hesitate to state if you are having doubts or second thoughts because they will not wait for some body language cues or something, they need it spelled out. And they won't take offense. So if you feel like you're not feeling better, do tell that to your practitioner.

Don't forget more than 50% (I think getting close to 70%) of the population of the entire UK live within the "Industrial Coffin" - the area roughly bounded by London, Birmingham, Liverpool and Leeds. The ggeographc centre of Great Britain might be somewhere in Cumbria but the centre of the population is probably somewhere between Birmingham and Sheffield, if not even further south (12% of the population of the UK live in London alone, and another 10% in the Home Counties).

I'm impressed right now at the mental health services in my area. I filled in an online self referral form yesterday and got a phone call today to make an assessment appointment within walking distance of me on Monday. This is the service for mild to moderate issues so not emergency needs either. Impressed it's so quick although I assume it'll slow down after the assessment. They do offer an online CBT guided by a therapist which might be enough to get me back on track and starts immediately.
