After that point everyone assumed, for years, that he'd been killed if not locked up on a Syrian government facility and starved to death there. But suddenly in 2016 he turns up alive, having his freedom from said Syrian facility negotiated by the U.S. State Department. Edit: All of this is basically transposed from the SAclopedia entry on Caro and I by no means am providing a first person account of his antics as someone who was there. Caro was a weird dude that everyone kind of ragged on in 2009-10, and I was reading one of his posts where he suddenly started describing how he knew that this local doctor (who he named and gave their address) was trying to blind him by shining a laser in his eyes, and I'll always remember the feeling of going from "haha this guy is crazy" to "oh, this guy is crazy."
