Just read a great Motorsport Prime article about how difficult it was for Sauber to get Raikkonen on the grid in 2001. Ron Dennis said, "Peter Sauber is insane getting a kid with no experience whatsoever in single-seaters," and then six months later paid so much to get Kimi out of his Sauber contract that it funded the Hinwil wind tunnel.

I woke up this morning, and turned on the TV. I wasn't really listening until I saw Charlie's picture on my country's news channel. I figured he announced something, and carried on. Until i realised that Charlie had actually died on the rerun of the news. First I was shocked, I mean I saw him doing his job yesterday... I went to work and actually spent the entire morning thinking of what Charlie meant to me. A random fan. The word that popped up in my head was: Safe Throughout the years of watching Formula 1, Charlie was always smiling. If I had any doubts about where our sport was going I would look at Charlie and think: No we'll be alright. As I went on thinking about Charlie's life and legacy for our sport, I realised he would probably not have cared if he would have died today. I feel like Charlie would be the type of man to have lived a happy life regardless of dying at a fairly young age. Take solace in this: There are worse lives to live, there are worse ways to die. He probaly died in his sleep, thinking about waking up in the morning and doing the job he loved. For the drivers, the teams and the fans. His responsibilities and his activities were such a heavy burden, yet never cracked and always smiled. Never disliked by almost 3 generations of drivers and many teams under different leadership. He was in fact as Toto said: A pilliar in our sport. The one thing I fear, is that Charlie's legacy may be forgotten, as he was often in the background. It shouldnt be and we as fans should honour his legacy. Yet here I am, a random fan, who only knows this man from pictures and videos, actually saddened by his death, a man always in the background yet still on national TV when the world learned of his passing. I think this says enough about Charlie's charachter, to be in the shadows and yet reach out so far. I applaud him for that. Thank you for everything Charlie, may you rest in peace.
