How much control did the KMT actually have in the early stages of the war? That is, how much of the defense of each region was from a centralized and coordinated army and how much was up to autonomous local forces?

Nominally, I think they had decent control of most troops (barring the communist forces).

In reality, the troops in general had barely any equipment, they weren't paid for months on end and the generals tended to be absent or not that competent, so "KMT" and "army control" are very vague terms throughout the war :v:

The carriers get a little to far away, and the troopships pay for it.

That's some drat fine bombing – thankfully most of my troops are ashore already.

Oh look, and escort – not that it helps, but it's and improvement!

Can you put up fighter sweeps over the bases your bombers won't stop attacking and try to thin the enemy CAP that way? IIRC from the various AARs on the Matrix forums, escort fighters function mostly as ablative armor rather than a good way to shoot down enemies going for your bombers.

Yup, that's what the "Sweep" mission is for: it orders fighters to fly to/over an enemy base and duke it out with the fighters on CAP duty.

Assuming you have time and squadrons to do it, you're supposed to sweep over a base to deplete their CAP, then bomb the base, still with fighter escorts to ward off whatever the sweeps didn't get.

Of course, getting the sweepers to go in before rather than after the bombers is apparently a dark art.

What is the difference between telling fighters to sweep an enemy hex and telling fighters to set up LRCAP on an enemy hex? I’ve seen both recommended on the Matrix forums as a way to suppress air defenses.

That's a lot of shooting for a small ship.

Defenders definitely get a bonus.

That's really cool news, though I am curious why they waited two months to put out the release. Skimming the article, they actually found its location in mid-January before going to look for USS Hornet. Obviously they want to conceal its exact location, but that goes for all the found ships and there isn't generally this long of a delay.

Not really important, I'm just idly wondering.

I'm an alien.

It's honestly kind of funny that the A6M5d-S variant of the zero is even in the game because I can't find any production statistics for it. According to Wikipedia they were armed with one 20 mm Type 99 that was pointed upward from the cockpit. The variant was intended to operate as night fighter that would intercept B-29s but they don't seem to have been very good at doing that due to lack of radar.

If you look closely at the order of planes you can see that the devs remembered to include the gun sticking out of the cockpit.

Accurate gun placement on sprites of obscure aircraft variant? Check.

Working ground combat model? Eh.

Working enemy AI? Ehhhhh.

Well, sprites are easy, you just need to double-check against the appropriate book of obscure aircraft to get that right.

But a decent ground combat model or functioning AI? That would take playtesting, and who has time for that?

Why are you getting to 1945 the hard way? Generate some 1944/1945 preset scenarios (historical, US player doing well, Japanese player doing well) and see if the scripts can deal with it.

The non-Admiral's Edition WITP actually does have 1942/1943/1944 and even 1945 scenarios, but nobody ever bothered for AE, probably because nobody plays them.

That will just make sure the script works in those scenarios.

Remember that the scripts have to take into consideration everything else that has happened. Taking a base in 1942 might stop the AI from doing something in 1945, like in the current Grey game. Except taking a base means taking a lot.

Making AI is hard, making AI for a game with this depth must be nearly impossible.

Here is a interesting video on how the Age of Empires 2 AI thinks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-S1CkfzEHSU Much simpler game, yet still a lot to think about.

I might also just be talking out of my rear end, if anyone want to correct me, please do.

Making a wargame AI is easy, making a wargame AI that doesn't end up trying to seize control of the nation's nuclear arsenal so it can win the game permanently is hard.
