Why does would the EU want to keep May in the game? She cannot pass this deal with this government, just let it die already so they can call a GE

Hiya UKMT, I see things haven't got less chaotic since I last looked in (health and life made me go internet light for over a month and I'm not reading roughly 20,000 posts to catch up).

Relevant to the above scenario (and hopefully not already discussed) and something to add to your theoretical models of "howfuckedarewereally?"
- I have it on very good authority that police leave in Scotland has been cancelled from March 30th onwards and that officers with certain specialist training have been told to expect to be deployed to Northern Ireland or Wales. Anyone who remembers the miners strike will recognise the playbook.

They want a corbyn government as much as May does.

A corbyn deal, yes.

A corbyn government, no.

They negotiated this agreement and would like it to pass as they've expended a lot of effort and internal political capital selling it among the member states - the alternative is hoping someone can bang together a majority for another deal (which the EU would then have to negotiwt and attempt to sell to member states who's tempers are getting increasingly frayed) which based on parliamentary arthimetic seems like an outside chance.

I mean, a big enough Tory win would mean we left on whatever terms May chose. That's what she was trying for in 2017, after all. The current hung-parliament-at-the-mercy-of-the-DUP-and-ERG is kind of an anomalous situation historically speaking, and in any of these circumstances:

1) Labour win outright
2) Labour/SNP coalition
3) Labour/LibDem coalition
4) Tory/LibDem coalition
5) Tories win outright

We either don't Brexit at all, since the SNP and LibDems could demand it as part of the coalition deal, or we soft Brexit, or we slightly harder but still not No Deal Brexit. All of these are better than the current situation when it comes to Brexit, though obviously the last two options are pretty poo poo for everyone not rich otherwise.

On the subject of soft brexit, what is the general consensus on major point to suck-ness?

For example, soft brexit with:
* YES freedom of goods, NO freedom of services, NO freedom of movement = Worse for most
* YES freedom of goods, services, movement = Better but not great for most?

Trying to wrap my head around what precisely is bad about soft brexit and how (and I don't mean that to sound like I'd prefer it vs. staying in)... I have a feeling I'll need to know for the upcoming weeks.

The main problem with soft Brexit is that we'd remain subject to EU regulations while losing all input into making them, so the EU could quite easily gently caress us over if they felt like it (basically the situation the Kippers shout about us being in right now).

the four freedoms aren't up for negotiation and never will be, the difference between soft and hard brexit is yes/no to all

"no" is taking a shotgun in the face to your economy (not that most parts of the UK would notice the service industries leaving until the knockon effects come crashing down) while losing all of your trade deals and negotiating incomparably worse ones because the EU has an army of international trade experts and we have Olly Robbins

"yes" means you abide by all the EU trade deals, product standards, and workers rights; the only difference is losing a seat at the table. This would have made the UK significantly better off had it been the case from 1979-present, but now we have a major party that isn't 99.5% pure vermin who hate clean water and the poor, so what's the point?

The main problem with soft brexit is that it doesn't give the appearance of changing the status quo in the ways that the brexit voting public desired. The solution to that problem is to no longer be ruled by a party that will seek to appeal to the political right.

If only Milliband had eaten a vegan sausage roll instead of a bacon sandwich, we wouldn't be in this mess.
So today on my facey-the-book I encountered a hard right bogot commenting on a friend's facebook page about how the christchurch terrorist was actually a socialist, and by the way hitler was a socilist and socialism is the root of all evil etc.

And I looked through his history and what a surprise I found misogyny and homophobia and racism and transphobnia as 'jokes' and pro-trump and the only surprise was how he's actually pro-vaccination (albeit he's british but of course thinks brexit is wonderful)

And rather than just my ongoing shredding of his points and providing quotations, I've called out every person who was 'friends' with him to ask them to justify it

And I'd like to think this is the cancer in our society, and i'm not sure if it's a move beyond the geek social fallacy or what, but this is one person's explanation on how they know he's awful but...

quote:

I don't see what he posts because i mute him, but i don't really believe he thinks those things

I am of course deleting everyone who continues to give this racist, misogynistic fuckhead a platform in the future.
