To be fair, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez haven't held back on pushing their somewhat exaggerated form of democratic socialism, and Ocasio-Cortez in particular really stepped into a problem when she started alluding to the labor theory of value in an interview at SXSW (the labor theory of value, a cornerstone of Marxist analysis, hasn't been taken seriously by economists since the 1890s).

The government cannot present a meaningfully different deal, because such a deal would have to be (re)negotiated with the EU. There's no time, not to mention absolutely no appetite in the EU whatsoever, to renegotiate the deal. Which means we are either looking at a no-deal Brexit on March 29th, or a long, possibly very long extension of the deadline. It's either crashing out in two weeks, or the UK will remain EU member for possibly years. Or the Tories vote out the Speaker of the House of Commons, but the pro-remain Tories in parliament would probably prevent that. If I understand this right, this is definitely a huge development. Thank's for linking this. I'll brave the UKPOL D&D thread to find out whether I'm right and will report back.

shame on an IGA posted:At what point could the Queen step in and just be like, FTFY we're not leaving? British monarchs have considerable reserve powers that just haven't been used for a very long time. But I don't think taking back Brexit is within those powers. She also wouldn't stay queen for long after that, of course. The whole thing right now is pretty interesting from a political science point of view. Bercow is the Speaker of the House of Commons. That's a non-partisan position, so Bercow left he Tories when he was elected speaker. He's presiding over the House of Commons. He doesn't lead the House like Nancy Pelosi leads the House in the USA, but simply presides over it and it's rules. The particular problem right now is the more than 400 year old document setting down the rules of the House of Commons. It states that the government cannot resubmit a defeated motion (or a motion being basically the same) to parliament again within the same session. That's to stop the government from bullying parliament into passing laws that parliament doesn't want to pass. Last week's Brexit vote actually was the second time MPs voted on Theresa May's deal with the EU, and Bercow now put his feet down and said enough is enough. There will be no third vote on the very same deal. That makes going forward very difficult for May. There already wasn't enough time to implement her deal before March 29th, so she would have to ask the EU for an extension anyway. How long that extension would need to be would depend on whether she got her deal through parliament or not. If her deal passes, she can ask for a Brexit delay of a few months. If it doesn't pass, she would be force to ask for a much longer delay. The whole thing is complicated by the fact that there are elections to the European Parliament at the end of May. Britain still being in the EU at that time would be very problematic for several reasons: 1. Per EU law, all member states must participate in EU parliament elections. 2. Those elections are expensive, and the Brits are not enthusiastic about holding them, when they leave a short time later. It would be a big wast of money. 3. The President of the European Commission, who is the head of the very powerful EU wide executive, is elected by the European Parliament, just like Theresa May was elected by the UK parliament. By (new) convention, the major candidate of the biggest party in the European Parliament gets elected Commission President. Britain still being in the EU could influence the outcome of this election. Furthermore, if Britain gets a longer Brexit delay, it's Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) could vote on all manner of motions that will be laid before the EU parliament, including the next 6 year budget, which would raise doubts about the legality of said decisions once the UK leaves. So now that Bercow ruled out a third try to pass May's EU deal, there are basically three options: No deal Brexit on March 29th, a longer Brexit delay, many months or possibly years, or ending the current session of parliament and creating another session. To address them in order: 1. Crashing out of the EU without a deal is very unpopular with all but the biggest Brexit hardliners in parliament. It's actually quite a bit more popular in the general populace, which is a testament to how powerful the largely Eurosceptic British press is, in that they convinced so many Britons that this wouldn't be a total shitshow. But parliament is a lot more cognizant of the dangers than the average Brit, and they really, really don't want this outcome. Problem is, unless some kind of legislation is passed to avoid a no-deal Brexit, Britain will automatically crash out on March 29th. Since until today no alternative to no-deal has passed parliament, that's a big problem. If they can't agree on something else, there will be a no-deal Brexit. 2. Delaying Brexit for longer (the current rumors are that the EU would be willing to offer May 9 months to 1.5 years extension) wouldn't solve the issue. May would still need to somehow come up with an alternative that can command a majority of the Commons, and it's currently not clear what that could be. Her current deal probably has the highest chance to be accepted, but was ruled out by Bercow. Labour has a much softer Brexit proposal, but if the Tory Remainers vote for it (and the Labour Brexiteers vote against it), it could shatter both the Tory and/or the Labour party. Not to mention that it's not cleat whether there are enough pro-Remain MPs who are in favor of something like this if it's the only alternative to a hard Brexit. Crucially, it would keep Britain in the Customs Union, which would automatically mean retaining Free Movement of People (in the EU), one of the main, if not the main sticking point of the xenophobic aspect of Brexit. If no majority for any alternative emerged, it could lead to perhaps even longer Brexit delays, perhaps until the next GE. The Tories fear they would face near certain electoral annihilation if they haven't led Britain out of the EU at that time. Or that parliament could decide to hold a second Brexit referendum, which might just take back Brexit, which would also likely lead to the broadly pro-Brexit Tory base to abandon the party for alternatives like UKIP. The fear of just such an outcome was the cudgel May tried to beat her own arch-Brexiteers with over the head in order to get them to agree to her deal. 3. Ending the current session of parliament. Theresa May could apparently ask Queen Elizabeth to prorogue parliament, and start a new session with the same MPs. Apart from the fact that the queen might refuse to do so, there's another problem for May: https://twitter.com/SamCoatesTimes/...agenumber%3D216 The Queen's Speech is basically the Prime Minister outlining their governing agenda, It's also basically a motion of confidence in the Prime Minister. if the PM can't get the Queen's Speech through the House of Commons, they don't have the confidence of the House and have to resign. Which means that Theresa May currently has no majority for her government in the UK parliament (which should be obvious by now), so that's not an option, shameful enough as it is. The way out of this would be a new General Election. All bets are off what would happen then, it could range from the Tories regaining their majority to Jeremy Corbyn becoming the new Prime Minister (the Labour leader becoming PM is the biggest nightmare of any conservative in Britain). So that's also very, very unpopular with the majority of the MPs. So right now, everything's in chaos, nobody knows how this could end. If nothing happens, the UK crashes out of the EU without a deal in less than two weeks. This whole series of events is extraordinary. Truly a massive political saga. Sorry for any spelling or grammatical errors, it's a long text to write in a foreign language. I hope it's mostly right. D&D wasn't actually too bad, because they were mostly commenting on the Bercow news.
