As a reminder we know the President cheated on his wife with a porn star while they were married. I realize Clinton was technically impeached for perjury under oath but anyone who thinks it wasn't about the moral outrage of a cheating husband (as opposed to, sexual harassment of an impressionable employee) is deluding themselves. The fact that nobody on the right seems to notice or care is pretty stupid.

At this point I have no idea what Trump that would cause the Republican Senate to break with him. Trump has achieved cult/conspiracy status. Evidence of strength. Evidence of weakness is actually a conspiracy to hide his strength. Etc.

Bullshit. The Clinton impeachment was about going after the Clinton's because they were Democrats. They didn't give a poo poo that he slept with an intern, they just wanted to endlessly investigate him and find anything they could.

I fully expect a "lol you and who's army?" take from the Trump administration.

Its not like Trump has all those documents locked up in his desk or hidden inside his tweetphone. The government has them, and members of that government will follow a final court order after DOJ loses because they don't want to go to jail. A promise of a pardon won't stop someone from just giving it to the house anyway and say "I had to follow the court order".

Kenneth Starr in particular was such a moral titan that he went on to cover up multiple rapes as president of a religious university.

“Undeniable” yeah ok. These are people that will slap you right across your face and then say “I didn’t slap you.”

If trump collapsed to the floor in the middle of a speech they would just say he’s so strong and virile he decided to spontaneously do a sit-up workout and the cameras didn’t pan down to show it.

Actually, I think most people would give the answer I gave. He remained popular throughout the impeachment, most people saw it for what it was. If you ask a CHUD who knows (or cares) what they would say - they live at 90 degrees from reality.

It is irrational. They literally can't comprehend how badly everyone under 40 got hosed.

I have noticed that even when they do understand and even agree in principle, there is a lot of inertia in expectations. If you grew up in a time when Bachelor's Degree meant automatically middle class, and Master's Degree meant corner office, its hard to instinctively understand why someone with a Master's Degree is working part time and spending 50% of their rent on a studio apartment. Same thing with all the complaints about smart phones---because if a smart phone is something that you didn't see for the first 40 years of your life, it still instinctively seems like a luxury. You can show someone over the age of 50 the numbers, and they might agree and sympathize in principle: that a smart phone is equal to the cost of about six weeks of basic health insurance, or 10 days of rent in a one bedroom apartment in a metropolis, but they will still emotionally revert to thinking of the smart phone as a luxury that is the reason why the millenial hasn't saved up money to buy a house in the suburbs yet.

Max Planck: "a new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.

This is equally true of economics and politics. The problem is the boomers are going to doom everyone with them by not dying soon enough.

I think this particular iteration of this particular recurring discussion is running into a disconnect between "the courts won't do anything" and "the Senate won't impeach"

two posters were drifting towards predicting that next week in a 5-4 decision Sam Alito will ban the Democratic Party, make Trump President for life, and mandate mayonnaise in every meal

(or more specifically and less hyperbolically that the SC will allow Trump to ignore subpoenas)

I don't really see more than two justices saying subpoenaing the president isn't allowed, and if I absolutely had to make a prediction it'd be zero (0) because Alito wants law enforcement and prosecutors to be omnipotent

It's one of those things that only the most insane of hardline partisans might go for because coming out and saying "The president is above the law in everything" has some really drastic consequences. They're willing to inch up to the edge but actually jumping off is rough.
