An insane mind posted:I still don't get how this game got on steam. Is it just edge lords being edgy? Because Valve literally doesn't care unless it gains some sort of media attention. Rapeday probably would have been quietly approved if the title wasn't so obviously a troll.

The only thing you need to do to get a game on Steam is to give Valve money. That is the beginning and end of their vetting process.

Just caught this article in my newsfeed, and I think the headline does it a disservice - I've quoted below the parts I wish they had actually focused on: Rami Ismail tells Valve “sucks to be you” over Epic store exclusives Edit: also it's all quotes from the full interview here, which has a lot more detail and criticism directed at Epic: https://www.pcgamesn.com/rami-ismail-interview “there’s an entire generation of indie game developers that got wiped out because of an algorithmic change in Valve’s recommendation algorithms and they said, ‘Well that’s just what the data said’. Well here’s what the data said, it said that Metro Exodus is not on Steam because the deal Epic gave [developer 4A Games] was better. Valve is now going to have to come to terms with the fact that it’s not the only major platform holder on the market, but Ismail suggests that the company isn’t likely to flounder repeatedly as it does so – “they’ll make some misses, but not always.” “You can tell that they’re a game developer at heart. They’re iterative and that’s sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. I hope they stay around because seeing them iterate through the problem of ‘poo poo, we have a competitor now’ – hopefully it’ll be hilarious.” And that's my point. Everyone is mad about Epic having exclusives and the quality of Epic's store and their business practices - and that's all valid, but Steam having REAL competition is extremely important and needed to happen YEARS ago. I might not ever buy a game from the Epic store in the foreseeable future, but I'm glad it exists because of the possibility it will make Steam - and the marketplace as a whole - better. Because clearly they won't do it on their own, as time has proven. Rotten Red Rod fucked around with this message at 20:31 on Mar 20, 2019 |

Rotten Red Rod posted:Just caught this article in my newsfeed, and I think the headline does it a disservice - I've quoted below the parts I wish they had actually focused on: The epic store is hilarious because it's trying to bill itself as killing steam and it can't even match steams actual competitors in origin and good old games. Massing exclusives to get people into your storefront is a good strategy, but you need a storefront worth a drat to keep the people that brings in. Meanwhile epic is bringing people into a storefront that can't even stop itself from illegally scanning people's private steam files. It's not even trying to run before you can walk, it's trying to ride a bike before they can crawl.

That's all true, and I'm not defending Epic. Again, I'm just glad that finally SOMEONE has the resources to actually have a chance at competing with Steam, and maybe, MAYBE someday they'll put some effort into their store not being full of kawaii Hitler games.

I recall Detroit being Cage's most successful game yet and it's metacritic user score is a whopping 8.6 at 2.6k reviews, I feel like goon and public opinion clash harder with that guy's games than with almost anything else.

Epic has already said that they want to be able to open the floodgates like steam, and there's zero reason why they wouldn't do that because they get a cut of all the sales done on their platform and through humble. Ismail is being extremely shortsighted about this and is insufferably smug about it as always.

Obsidian's next game Outer Worlds is an Epic exclusive so looks like we have to use it soon if we don't already. It must be funny though that kids think they're named Epic because of memes or whatever when it has been their name since the 90s.

They kept insisting the delay was due to Vita certification and then when the patch was finally ready suddenly announced it was the final patch and that was that despite the game being blatantly unfinished. It was a real shame as I like the game a lot but left a real bad taste in my mouth for the devs.

Glagha posted:I mean I understood the words you said but like, in what way is the game unfinished? Oh sorry. The way you phrased it made it sound like I was real unclear. Placeholder stuff's still in the game for a lot of things. Like the Oasis unlock is suppose to have some other boss instead of yet another Big Bandit but they never finished the boss. The character they were working on for release isn't finished (Cuz). The entire looping system in general was only in as a placeholder for a proper progression and ending and was gonna be like an optional challenge mode is more or less now the entire gameplay, and they just threw in (one of?) the final intended level as a secret in the loop. A lot of story elements are in and meant to lead somewhere but just doesn't as a result. It's a real drat shame as a lot of it was real interesting. The long story short for all of this is that Vlambeer burned themselves going too hard on updates and decided to just never update again outside of getting the Nuclear Throne Together guy to throw together one last update.

Where do terrible shovelware games come from? Here's one answer. https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019/03/a-dev-trained-robots-to-generate-garbage-slot-machine-games-and-made-50k/ quote:They teamed up during the 2013 Global Game Jam to push something out that resembled the "race to the bottom" they saw on mobile platforms. Thanks to the time-restricted nature of a game jam, they opted to buy a 3D slot machine asset off of the Unity Store (a marketplace that lets game makers pay modelers and animators for unrestricted use of various 2D and 3D assets) for $15. They then spent the rest of the jam creating a system that would automatically generate the rest of the skinning needed to make this basic virtual slot machine just unique enough to be published as its own smartphone app.
