So everyone being so doom and gloom about it is baffling to me.

Also, I wish viera were never put in this game because they have never been an interesting race. They were boring in FF12 and they're still boring now. The amount of people going psycho for them is honestly baffling to me.

Greyarc posted:

For me it’s not about the races in particular so much as what they represent by gender-locking them. Women sexy only, guys beastly only is a running thing in media that women in particular have been pigeonholed into, especially in video games. FF14, a game which up until now was pretty renowned for being decent with gender stuff, added:

1: a female only race that was sold in their teaser as basically playboy bunny girls that wink at you
2: male only race that is beastly with a beast face rather than the standard pretty faces everyone else has

Which feels like they’ve time-traveled back a decade or two and thought “Hey, you know what we need for our video game? To appeal more to the 13-30 straight male audience! What? Other demographics? What other demographics?”

Yes, some women/gay guys/other are going to play and be happy with the sexy ladies and beast men, and this is fine for them. And straight guys can play what they want, which on its own is fine too – the problem is the lack of options to play as anything buy sexy lady or beastly man with the new races. Because bunny guys make the male devs uncomfortable and beast ladies are… Whatever, nobody likes buff ladies anyway, amirite?

Again, I’ve got no problem with the current female viera or male Hrothgar, I just want them to be equal, gender and culturalwise. I'm hoping they add male viera and female Hrothgar so it doesn't feel like pandering to a narrow audience while shutting out the rest of the playerbase. More options are better, and if a limited budget was the issue they still could've handled it in ways that weren't leaning on tired stereotypes.

It doesn't make me particularly angry, but it does get me kinda down.

This is a very reasonable post and I like it.

However, from what I've experienced, the loud vitriolic people are controlling the narrative right now with the message that this is either:
* a direct attack by the developers on the queer/trans community (which, while I disagree, Japan as a whole is unfortunately not known as a bastion of queer/trans acceptance, but that doesn't make it okay),
* this is proof that YoshiP is going to renege on every good design choice in the game (when he had mentioned so far back as 2013 interviews that if they did viera, they would be female only and we'd get a male only race),
* this was a malicious scheme to trick players (uhhh, okay?)

I mean, Discord last night was one step away from this:

quote:

I'm back. I prepared this in advance, and posting it as they are clapping for these ridiculous cat race. Let me first say this: I hate Hrothgar because they came at the cost of male Viera and I'm not going to forget this ever.

Well it seems that they’ve gender-locked Viera and Hrothgar after all.
How disgusting, sexist, and homophobic - still uncomfortable designing male bunnies huh? You know I’ve really come to see this all as an attack on my identity especially after several of my posts in this thread were reported and I was banned because apparently someone is upset that I was very vocal about why I want male Viera and the fanart I was posting? I’m not sorry about what I said back then and this attempt at silencing me failed.
You know what would have been nice? Not being so secretive and being up front with us from the start, but no, they just had to cash in on everyone’s preorders before throwing this in our faces. This is why you cannot trust preorders these days at all. Thank god I had the foresight to not buy Shadowbringers. I can’t imagine that they would have refunded me. After all that I’ve seen I’ve come to the conclusion that this was a predatory tactic that took advantage of people’s trust, and they will go out of their way to silence anyone who speaks out against them. They are being anti-consumer and anti-player with the way they are behaving.
So in the end, they lost the money I was about to spend on the expansion, my recurring subscription which I have canceled, and any other Mog Station related purchases I would have made for fantasias/outfits/mounts. I refuse to be taken advantage of and I refuse to blindly follow this game into the abyss it’s going to sink into at this rate.
Good riddance and goodbye.

I totally understand being disappointed if you were hoping for male bunnies. I do think SE kind of backed themselves in a corner with viera. Many people wanted buff bunnies, many people wanted twinks. Either way, SE was going to upset one group. They just happened to upset both.

So much of this comes across as "I'm mad things aren't better/more how I wanted them to be." which, yeah, totally. But everyone has different ideas of what "things being better" is, but that doesn't matter because right now we can all be mad together even though we wouldn't be pleased each other's solutions to the problem.

Yeah I don't think anyone is saying SE handled this particularly well, but acting like the dev team and YoshiP specifically are sitting in their offices with massive erections as they think of all the people they upset is ridiculous.

To answer the above post, I was hoping for male Viera in the style of the concept art we saw before where they looked kinda tribal-y, and I really did not want Ronso. In the end it was unlikely any race would be more than an alt for me though so I'm not too bothered, though neither race being able to wear headgear is kind of.. poo poo.

It's tough because you're right, there is no one correct answer. But doing it the way they did definitely left room for improvement in pretty much every regard. One place to start is like others say: Don't make genderlocked races. Most players seem to agree genderlocking is bad.

I'm happy with the whole parallel dimension thing for the expansion, though it'll take a lot of lore finagling to fit that into the current story point we're at. I knew we'd get something like this just because FFXI did something similar with the time travel expansion. The races I'm ambivalent on. What would really hurt my enjoyment of SHB would be them pivoting even more to FFXI style gameplay outside of a niche corner like Eureka. Otherwise I'm happy as a clam with the status quo.

gently caress they could've just dodged the issue entirely even if they still wanted to do it this way by going "hey we wanted to give you one of each side, beastly race and bunny race now, since new races are a lot of work, but we're working on and will implement viera females/ronso males down the line." People would have still been upset but then everyone would have eventually gotten what they wanted.

also they should have explicitly said at the last fanfest "hey sorry no viera males" if the plan is no bun boys ever. doing it in this hint hint nudge nudge "tee hee see next fan fest" fashion is almost certainly what made this whole situation go from "people upset" to "defcon two," in conjunction with the no new healer thing.

The people whoc are enough to watch fanfest will buy the expansion no matter what 99% of the time, and hinting at stuff may tip some people to preordering or buying, so there's no real reason not to play coy from a business standpoint. The ones screaming that they're quitting would have found some other reason to do so now or down the road anyway.

Disappointment is fine, but a lot of it is hyperbole like "it's not exactly what I want, so I hate it all." What's absurd is the amount of people calling SE and YoshiP specifically homophobic, or saying the game's dead, or the endless flood of other absurd complaints that have followed every source of media on this game at the moment. If you don't roll your eyes at that, I don't know what else to say. Even if the SA thread is more tempered than the rest, every other source I've seen borders on hilarity.

And it's not even not giving a poo poo for most others. It's laughing at how thin certain repeated arguments are, while accepting the good and the bad shown so far.
