Last recession, I got fired right after, and I'm only just now recovering from that series of events that that kicked off. There's gotta be people out there that are still feeling the effects of the 08 recession.

Statistically, everyone who came into the job market during that time is feeling it and will feel it for their entire lives. There's some graph somewhere showing that people who become workers during a recession receive less pay than those out of a recession, and their pay never rises to fully meet the other group.

Yeah this has been coming for quite awhile now. Facebook stripped most of the targeting tools from real estate related accounts sometime last year.

Real estate agent here. This is a huuuuuge racket. There are dozens and dozens of companies out there that charge serious money to real estate agents to generate leads through Facebook and it is absolutely discriminatory as hell. They usually go after newer agents that don't have a clue what they're doing and convince them to cough up hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars a month to do their advertising for them. You give them piles of cash and tell them what kinds of people you want to target. They put together the campaigns run them and then give you the contact information of the people that respond. I get calls at least once or twice a week from companies trying to sell you on their unique model and I don't think I've ever heard from the same company twice.

You couldn't define the parameters by race, but you could basically narrow things down enough so that you effectively were. People are under the impression anything changed recently but all that happened was that you were asked to pinkie swear not to discriminate through some online form then you could go right back to doing it.

That being said steering and telling people demographics about neighborhoods is a way bigger problem then online advertising. Agents break rules about fair housing all the time and local real estate boards don't do a loving thing about it because they want their yearly dues. I haven't found too many racist agents, but I've come across enough racist potential clients to know agents will just do what they want in order to please them.

I was showing a house yesterday that got double booked so there was another agent there with someone. My clients were black and he had a white guy with him. The entire time we were in the house I could hear him asking the guy "Are you sure this neighborhood is a good fit for you? I don't think it would be. I don't really like the look of it." It was painfully obvious what he was hinting at. I loving hate realtors.

There is absolutely a memo somewhere inside Facebook talking about how illegal housing discrimination is an inevitable side effect of the Algorithm but the only way to fix it would be to compromise the Algorithm and that would be even worse.

A significant reason I went to grad school had to do with the job markets back in 2010. I took one look at them, realized I would likely still be unemployed by the time I got my Master's, and stayed within the academic bubble.

I was off by a year. It took me a year AFTER getting said degree to find a job in my field, during which I remained solvent largely through web coding and subsisting largely on ramen. Now I have another $80,000 in student debt that acquires that much more interest per month...and nearly had a heart attack when DeVos started trying to gently caress around with repayment in '17 and '18. I realize I'm massively privileged in the fact I could delay feeling the effects of the '08 recession that long, but the fact remains that I'm still nervously watching my bank balance, watching that loan payment rise by another panic-inducing amount per month every February. I'm still one missed paycheck from hitting a downward spiral.

And I'm in one of those lucrative, decently-paying STEM jobs everyone screams that their children need to get into.
