I believe part of what warps these peoples' world view so intensely is that they think that TV shows and movies are real

A couple of months back there were these metro ads around DC for FBI recruiting, with the line "field agents can come from any background". I'm surprised no one has captures a photo of that ad to incorporate into the LARP.

Being nice to conservatives won’t stop them from being conservatives. Explosively fragile whites who voted for Obama but “turned” racist were always dangerous, and it’s not anybody’s fault but theirs that they finally bit you.

There was an interview with Matthew Continetti on the Ezra Klein Show recently, where he had an interesting quote "If the left thinks the religious right is bad, just wait 'till they see the non-religious right." Now, he was making a point about how, without Christianity, the American right would descend into blood-and-soil, Euro-style nativism.

But I think QAnon also fits into this. God is dead, but people need something to fill the god-shaped hole that's left behind. Conspiracy fills the gap. And we didn't have anything to speak to that, but Trump did.

Boxer Rebellion is a good comparison to Q, as it was started by literal fake news. Hearst Papers ran a story about China selling the Great Wall, and servants in European Enclaves saw this, brought the news back home, and people freaked the poo poo out.

That's exactly what it is. Trump made a series of grandiose promises to his base that he would get rid of the undesirables (especially those darn Mexicans taking their jobs!), make it okay to use Christian fundamentalist beliefs to run a business, make America rich, and bring manufacturing back to the Rust Belt and coal mining back to West Virginia. Anyone with a shred of common sense or a suspicion of hucksters immediately recognized Trump as a senile conman who knew less than nothing about economics and politics, but the base who voted for him fell for his manufactured strongman image and loved the idea of a politician who spoke their racist, virulently nationalist beliefs out loud.

Q is a reaction to reality. Trump made all of these promises that he'd create the white America full of coal plants and pickup trucks of their dreams, only for it to immediately become apparent that all the people who said he was a dumbass were actually right! He thinks you can run the economy and do political negotiations the same way that he would make boardroom deals, so he tries to use aggressive negotiating tactics, threats, or simply walking out of the room without making a deal in the hopes that the other side is so desperate that they'll chase after him. Surprise, he's no longer the most powerful guy in the room and everyone can just stare him down until he blinks! Farmers are getting their business hosed up by pointless trade wars, he's obviously corrupt, scores of people involved with him are getting indicted and arrested for what they did on his orders, and the only thing he's got saving him is the rest of the GOP being corrupt and spineless enough that they cover up everything to try and keep him in power. Coal jobs don't come back because rhetoric doesn't make coal suddenly not obsolete, and you don't see factories sprouting up in the Midwest because there's actually a reason people do international trade instead!

So instead of acknowledging the truth of their senile pissbaby president, they immediately slide into a delusion that they were right the whole time and Trump is secretly a mastermind. Stuff that looks like him having a dementia moment is actually a sign to his followers! He only hasn't succeeded at fixing everything because all the Democrats are secretly running a shadow government opposing him! It's way easier than admitting that you elected a dumbass.

People are suffering. They have worse lives than their parents, worse jobs, worse prospects, worse homes, they are dying of drugs and diseases. Trump gave them easy answers. But they correctly identified they had serious issues and were struggling, in a way that is often mocked or scorned, and no one else seemed to be speaking to them.

Yeah, it's a sort of extreme manifestation of the stubbornness everyone goes through when it looks like they're wrong. Because they've built their identities and thoughts of the future on the success of Trump, seeing him be revealed as an utter fraud and failure of a meat sack is crushing. When given the opportunity to believe anything else, of course they'd take it.

Before that, though, they were voting for pro-union democrats. Granted the democrats were racist then but still. Dismissing everybody who votes republican as a worthless idiot monster is part of why Trump is in office now. There are a lot of poor, rural people who are being fed propaganda by the right because nobody else is talking to them. They are not all racist assholes. A lot of them are, but not all of them. At some point the left needs to figure out how to reach these people, because relying entirely on educated coastal metropolitans is not working, and you can't educate people you've given up on.

They are in fact worthless idiot monsters, considering they're Qanons, bro

The left has no need, but more importantly no ability, to reach out to the Trump voter base: reasonably well off racist morons, who by the way mostly live in suburbs just like most of the rest of the country does. Stop with crocodile tears about "poor rural people" in the context of trump support, they were very much not his base and the poor people of rural areas in fact vote much more often for Democrats than they vote for Republicans - when they're able to vote that is!

zoux

Were they voting for pro-union democrats before or after 1965

IMO gently caress em, we need to reach out to left-of-center non-voters and stop pretending that the Trump base is just disaffected coal miners who if they were shown the light of socialism would instantly come around, but rather a bunch of suburban Christian dominionists who pretend to be persuadable but aren't.

Qanons aren't poor rural people, nor is Trump's base. Trump won 2016 with more or less the same voters who voted for Romney in 2012.

When you exclude the racist assholes and the people who are already voting for Democrats, there just aren't that many "reachable" poor rural people. The route to winning future elections (for either party) is in cities and suburbs, simply because that's where people live.
