It probably also helps when you're a full caster with a full battery of spell slots, and not a half caster with better ways of spending your time and spell slots.

Nat 20s on attack rolls auto-hit. Nat 20s on attack rolls are criticals. Criticals are not auto-hits. A Chamption with an expanded crit range can still miss on a critical. Namaste.

Moonbeam on Ancients Paladin is nice in the sense that you'd otherwise just not have any AoE options, but the situations in which you'd actually use it are rare even in a party composition lacking on AoE. Also, enemy lycanthropes in CoS are optional unless you roll them having a key item. Toshimo posted:Nat 20s on attack rolls auto-hit. Technically correct, but even a gimped level 3 Champion rolls 22 on a 19, which beats the AC of pretty much everything on the official material (only Terrasque and Tiamat have AC>22). Thanks for all the thoughts on moonbeam. Since smites do radiance damage the aoe is the best part of that and we have a evocation wizard doing most of the work there.

The big thing is that it lasts a minute and keeps damaging things, and you can move it around if you need to. So it's fairly efficient damage in any situation where you need it and don't have to move it every turn.

Even if you're attacking with an 8 attribute, that still makes your level 3 attacks be at +1. Strahd's Animated Armor is the only monster below CR 12 that has AC 21+.

Farg posted:seems like a dumb edge case to me, just let the expanded crit be a crit Yeah same. From a close reading Toshimo is absolutely correct since the PHB separates auto-hitting on a nat-20 from scoring a critical hit, but I think it's a classic example of RAW v. RAI. Fighters have a tough enough time without rules-lawyering that the definition of a critical hit does not actually involve hitting something. That Crown of Madness forcing a Dex Fighter to melee attack their own allies could have a negative To Hit and thus miss on an expanded crit. That's the exact kind of situation in which you would want it to not be an auto-hit.

Re: the class selection for a three man Strahd I think the tricky part for me would be coming up with an interesting wizard or paladin. I've had lots of fun character concepts before but "wizard" and "paladin" just shutter my brain to the vanilla examples. There's a YouTube series called Role Initiative that imo has fun class concept brainstorming videos, but wizard doesn't speak to me other than the one I did independently, and there's no paladin one yet. I guess there's always the first character I made and didn't get to play, an Ancients Paladin someone here described as a "beer knight."

I once played a high elf with the noble background, Lady Anastasiel from the (former) Seelie Winter Court. Unfortunately for her, the Winter Court had been overthrown by a communist uprising so she had to gtfo and take up an adventurer's life to maintain her high standard of living. Looking fabulous and murdering things for their wealth was basically all she knew, after all. But of course, it was a 5e game so it was short-lived. The DM literally quit the campaign mid-combat over how poo poo it was.

My setting's Drow are separate from other elves because of their proletariat uprisings and successful application of praxis to a magical society to implement a strong social safety net and equality for all. The reason they look down and seek to undermine other races and peoples are because they correctly identify them as capitalists.

Quick multiclass question: I'm playing a Rogue/Warlock multiclass in a Curse of Strahd campaign. I'm currently Rogue 1 / Warlock 4 and am at the point where I need to start thinking of just what balance I want this multiclass to end up at. I've gone Bladelock for my Warlock archetype and plan to go Swashbuckler with the Rogue for the added battlefield mobility and dodginess. As the campaign is probably only going to level 10 I'm currently thinking of an even 5/5 split, which gives me 3 invocations and third level spell slots as well as access to the introductory Swashbuckler features and uncanny dodge while still leavingt enough ASIs to get my Charisma to 20. Is that workable or am I missing a way that's going to gently caress me over?

Originally to suit the backstory I had in mind for the character - A would-be dungeon-diver and general rogue with Swashbuckling aspirations who unwittingly becomes the host of an ancient, demonic entity that gives her powers. Mechanically I'm thinking a more mobile, slightly more martial-leaning Hexblade that can dart in and out of enemy threat ranges without incurring AOEs that is pretty much entirely Charisma based so I can pull some party face action.

Toshimo posted:Nat 20s on attack rolls auto-hit. You are omitting an important word here. "If the d20 roll for an attack is a 20, the attack hits regardless of any modifiers or the target's AC. In addition, the attack is a critical hit, as explained later in this chapter." (PHB 194) "When you score a critical hit, you get to roll extra dice for the attack's damage against the target..." (PHB 196) Champion: "...your weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20" (PHB 72) There is no such terminology in 5E as a "critical," only a "critical hit." The word "hit" in "critical hit" means that it is a hit. While I agree that relying on "natural language" to parse rules situations like this is a massive cop-out, it is nevertheless the case that if my champion rolls a 19 on a weapon attack, that attack scores a critical hit. Which means that it scores a hit, by definition, because you cannot score a critical hit with an attack that does not hit. The whole thing should have been written from the beginning that rolling a "20" is a critical hit, which solves this problem. Note that Adamantine Armor reduces a critical hit to a normal hit. If the expanded crit range attacks were considered to need to match AC, then someone wearing Adamantine Armor who faces a champion who rolls a "19" but fails to match AC would still be hit, because the "critical hit" would be reduced to a "normal hit" which would still hit and do regular damage, while someone not wearing Adamantine armor wouldn't be hit at all if the attack didn't match AC.
