I'm surprised anyone voted for Deep Cover. I can't really imagine a scenario where it would be useful.

I got a crossclass Deep Cover as a random ability on a Sniper. That actually convinced me to take Aim because every time she double moved she auto-hunkered and proc'ed the +20 to hit from Aim.

On the other hand, that takes a great random roll to get that combo, and Untouchable has saved so many Rangers from injury or death over the various games I've played that it's pretty much an auto-pick.

Yeah, I feel like Deep Cover is just there because they needed something on the tree opposite Untouchable. The latter synergyzes so much better with other Ranger abilities: it lets you be far more aggressive with Run & Gun and Slash, and can be used to bait out attacks when used correctly with Implacable. Being able to have Implacable, Bladestorm and Untouchable on the same character in WotC is incredibly broken: murder a dude, then run over to a second dude who can't do anything next turn except take a blade to the face. Deep Cover feels like it would be good on a grenadier or sharpshooter.

in retrospect the old redtext was a little over the top, I think I was in a bad mood that day. it appears you've learned your lesson about slagging our gods and masters at beamdog but I'm still going to leave this av up because i think its funny

I did the Lost Tower mission pretty early in my game - had only slightly experienced soldiers and ballistic weapons, no bluescreen rounds, no EMP bombs, and no frost grenades/Alien Hunters weapons

I did have the presence of mind to bring more than the usual share of specialists with Haywire protocol and didn't waste slots on anything truly useless.

It's doable but it's a really tough, tense mission. Soldiers rarely did enough damage to take out enemies with one shot, and with them spawning two each turn it could get hairy quickly. I got through it by abusing Lily's reusable special abilities, and using Haywire Protocol when things really turned to custard (which included some better-than-average luck in my rolls), and by saving all my grenades for shredding the final boss. No casualties but some injuries.

Leaving it as late as you did and having the OP Alien Hunter weapons does take the wind out of its sails...

Hell, mag weapons in general cut into the difficulty seriously. Being able to oneshot the mecs is a massive help.

Behind the scenes, Julian has less accuracy than a normal sectopod, and only hits half as hard. A normal sectopod can one-shot dudes in predator armor. He also doesn't have access to the lighting field or wrath cannon, though the latter is a waste of the sectopod's turn anyway. He's a big ole stack of HP, but that's it.
I believe this has the potential to backfire spectacularly when they run into a real Sectopod.

The German one is the best, but I'm not sure they turned on the options to have other languages than English.

e: They didn't, Ella is French and speaks English. Anyhow, to the LPers: the game has an option to use unit voices in the languages of the countries they come from (well, mostly, there's like French, German and Spanish) - for some reason this has to be turned on manually.

Yes.
Personally I'd love if there were more accented English voices. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me for a multinational group of people to just babble away at eachother in their respetive mother tongues. The concept of Lingua Franca exists for a reason.

If someone selected French for their character at creation that's what their character will do. But if they've chosen an English voice with a French nationality that's what they get.

I doubt it: their "frost grenade bukkake" tactic will work just as well on real Sectopods as it did on Julian, who never got a shot off. When Sectopods (and Gatekeepers) first show up, it's as packs of one with no support. By the time they start seeing them multiple times per mission, they'll probably have plasma guns and at least one Magi, which decreases a player's reliance on once-per-mission powers. Between Heavy Ordnance and the Serpent Suit, they're going to have 3x freezes per mission for the rest of the game. They've also realized that something bad happens every time you advance the plot, so I'm not counting on the Avatar catching them unaware. I think they have it in the bag.

If you're relying on frost to stop a real sectopod getting a turn, you might be unhappy at the results...

What happens? I played through without the DLC for frost bombs and strategically deployed Stasis to shut those jerks up as needed so I don't know how they interact with frost. Do their double shots let them break out early?

Frost, like the Shutdown hack result, denies a certain number of actions. Real sectopods get more actions per turn than other enemies...

Nope, it's a robot. Quite similar to bugs but fewer legs and more metal.

ADVENT Mecs are the same, which is why when their pod activates they don't run for cover and overwatch instead.

Yeah I'm really looking forward to that moment just to see if it even surprises them at all. I can totally imagine them deducing that last time they did a skulljack for the plot, they got hit with that surprise Codex, so skulljacking a Codex for the plot has got to do something nasty!

The rocket launcher does have 2 shred on it per the wiki, not sure why it wasn't on the tooltip. Also note that the range and radius were both higher than even plasma grenades.

So the thing about the Rocket Launcher that makes it nice is it's range. The thing can shoot nearly twice as far as a Grenade Launcher and two and half times as far as a thrown Grenade. True, as you noticed, you get no arc on the shot, but it does have 2 armor shred. They're respectable weapons. And they lead into the MUCH better Blaster Launcher down the line! To say nothing of Shredder weapons!

IMO, the EXO suit is a direct upgrade for Grenadiers, and, if you're feeling frisky, Psi Soldiers. I once stuck a Specialist in one with a maximally upgraded assault rifle because all my Grenadiers were wounded/fatigued. Yes, you lose the extra utility slot, but you gain the heavy weapon. Rocket launchers are great for removing armor and cover, which, along with proccing holo targeting, is what I bring Grenadiers for in the first place.

This is the same tooltip that says it takes both actions to use a rocket. Xcom has some issues with misleading or actively lying tooltips.

Also oh man that ending. They might have a bad time.

Speaking of Dark Events, I love that the Vigilance Dark Event activated, the enemy packs got the extended detection range, and it was so ineffectual that Nat and Tea didn't even notice it go into effect!

As this mission shows, Vigilance is a laughable dark event until suddenly it's not. On a related note, it also shows that when you have squad concealment the last soldier you want to scout with is your Phantom one, since if another soldier gets revealed the phantom one is still concealed, but if the phantom soldier gets revealed the whole squad is.

It only attains its truly laughable state in WOTC, when the radius is unchanged--still 1--for Reapers. Although they added another Dark Event to the expansion that's Vigilance But More where you just don't get Concealment.

I actually think Vigilance is one of the worst dark events, because it increases the chances of accidentally activating a pod, and accidental pod activation is one of the leading causes of soldier death.
