I'm not entirely sure how labeling the Republican Guard as a terrorist organization works when you already have tons of sanctions against Iran, but the Republican Guard goes beyond being a military branch and controls a huge chunk of the economy. In the absence of sanctions, this would effectively be a sanction on any business owned and operated by that organization. Since they've got their fingers in so many different pots, most companies would just stop doing business with Iran to avoid accidentally dealing with the IRCG. Again, anyone who relies on the international banking system is already not doing business with Iran because of sanctions, so I don't know what this is supposed to accomplish.

Random Stranger posted:There are a lot of drugs where there's no concern for that. On top of that, patents are going to run out at the same time; if you patent pikachu as a medication for high blood pressure and the method of manufacturing it, the patents expire at the same time. And further, patent law says explicitly that the Federal government can go "lol, we're just going to use this" so you can't sue them for patent infringement. Doing this with whatever the hot new drug is would be a bad idea for lots of reasons, but there's no concern there. The poster children for how patents aren't the entire problem are the two fast-acting insulin brands - humalog and novalog. Both had every possible patent related to them expire long ago but are still absurdly expensive and locked in an every-escalating price hike cycle which reeks of price-fixing. The reason why is that like a lot of new drugs they are sourced from specially engineered bacteria strains, and to make a generic of either you'd need samples of the already-approved production bacteria to culture into your own production setup. Nobody can get those because Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisc guard them like the money-printing machines they are and there is no mechanism currently in place to force them to turn them over. Theoretically you could spin up your own strains and get them approved but the costs would be enormous and the instant the ink dried on the approval both companies would a) bury you in lawsuits to cost you even more and b) drop their prices temporarily to the cost of production ensuring that you'll never ever make a profit. That's the case with a whole bunch of generic medications and is why we need state-run production to be an option - the "free market" is broken here.

I mean if the government spun up their own strains and forced a price drop wouldn't that benefit everyone except the pharma execs? Like, the state can eat the cost for the public good, diabetics not having access to insulin is a national loving emergency. It's so strange that we're not allowed to do this when it seems so obvious that the benefits of doing it for literally millions of citizens outweighs an possible negatives. Eminent domain for life-saving medication should be way more common.

Like, the state can eat the cost for the public good, diabetics not having access to insulin is a national loving emergency. Well, that's just it. There's no reason that the government is not allowed to do this. It's not even "eminent domain"; the law explicitly says that the government can just roll their own insulin production facilities and that anyone who gets pissy about it can gently caress off. But the federal government manufacturing drugs is something that's not on anyone's political radar. I haven't even heard universal health care proponents talk about it. I think it's an easier sell than it appears at first blush, too, when every congress person gets a facility making something in their district bringing in some high paying jobs.

Doing this with whatever the hot new drug is would be a bad idea for lots of reasons, but there's no concern there. Just a quick correction here. Patents don't expire at the same time. Companies apply for patents in a staggered fashion to extend monopoly control over the market for any given drug. It's not uncommon for the manufacturing process patent to extend past the expiration of the drug patent by years.
