Hey everyone, I'm Ira Steven Beir, and like Jesus on the cross, I suffered to bring you the majesty of 90s serialized space soap opera. And now, to show off what 20 million kickstarter dollars can bring you, here's a 20 second clip of the show, now in glorious high definition for the first time. Rick called me up and told me he would shoot my dog if I showed this. Anyway, we're starting up a new kickstarter for a full 720p HD restoration, with a starting goal of 500 million.

Ira Behr comes off like a weeaboo fanfic writer who actually got the chance to run their own show and relished every minute of it. It’s both very endearing but also a bit self-indulgent.

I don't recall Behr being a big Trek fan when he first started writing for TNG. Maybe he got into it more later, or maybe I'm misremembering.

I'm pretty sure a lot of the TOS callback stuff came from either Ron Moore (who was pretty much the token Trek fan on the writing staff and took regular poo poo for it) or from art department guys who'd slip in references when they got asked for planet names or made the Okudagrams.

As much as I roll my eyes at S31, what really deeply annoys me is that a lot of people (fans and writers alike) would be all too eager to say "LEYTON WAS A SECTION 31 OPERATIVE!!!!!!!!!" because of course everyone who was ever shifty or bad in Starfleet must have also been involved in ~~*~Section 31~*~~. I mean, he was. The Dominion was an existential threat, there were Changeling infiltrators on Earth, Starfleet was not prepared for the coming fight, and the sitting president was not the right person for the job. But "orchestrate false flag attacks as part of coup" was not the correct avenue to pursue.

Do you know why he always wears sunglasses and has a purple beard?

Early on in DS9 they couldn't spare the office space among the "creatives" so the DS9 staff had to share an office with uncreative suits-types. These uptight suits would look at Ira and his writer buddies not wearing suits and judge them. So as a big gently caress you he died his beard a crazy colour just to show them! Ha, gently caress your uptight sensibilities you squares, I'm a CREATIVE.

The sunglasses were because when he was in university he just forgot to take his sunglasses off indoors one day and a GIRL told him he looked silly, so he never took them off to show her.

He can't stop doing either because it would mean the popular girls and suits won.

Yeah, there was a series of Trek books about secret Section 31 operatives on the casts of all four shows at the time.

Voyager's was Seven, incidentally, courtesy of the Borg assimilating a Section 31 operative and somehow that getting downloaded into Seven's brain.

TNG's was the helm guy who got assimilated in First Contact.

Actually you have it a tad wrong. Lt. Hawk wasn't the Section 31 agent, it was more the Section 31 agents in the novel were trying to convert him to the cause. At the end of the book he's basically like "This is all really hosed up and crosses too many lines" and then tells Picard all about it. Also one of the Section 31 agents was Picard's friend from the academy, and one of his other friends is in the book as a Admiral from Starfleet Intelligence. I still have no idea why I read this book and my only excuse was it was 50 cents at a library book sale.

I think the TOS one is something dealing with Cartwright being the one to assign the mission to steal the Cloaking device from the Romulans because Section 31 needed it for reasons also there's an Omega Molecule-related plot they're up to because of course there is.

In the Voyager episode with the Omega Molecule they mentioned that the only previous Federation experiment with a molecule ended in disaster (and it happened during Kirk's time), so that book talks about that specific incident

The one that made the most sense as a S31 op was that holoship from Insurrection that was going to be used to get the Ba'ku off the planet so Starfleet would have full access to the healing properties of the planet. They never explicitly said it was S31 in the movie but a book took that idea and it made sense to me as something S31 would do.

I don't agree with idea that the Khitomer Conspiracy would have been S31. It would make no sense for them to provoke a war between the UFP and the Klingons.

Dude is directly responsible for DS9's success, he would straight up lie to Berman saying "oh ya the Dominion War is only going to be a couple episodes" and "you are a great guy, Rick." And Rick would believe him and leave him alone to make some awesome television.

If that comes with a purple beard and fedora so be it.

This is why S31 as a concept is garbage. They are either involved in every type of plot like this, or they are incompetent and bad at their jobs.

In a world where S31 exists, the Khitomer Conspiracy had to have gone one of three ways. Either 1) S31 knew about a supported the Conspiracy, meaning they wanted a war for no reason and failed to achieve it, 2) S31 knew about the Conspiracy and was opposed to it, but were incapable of having any meaningful effect and it was only stopped thanks to our heroes, so they still failed, or 3) S31 had no idea what was going on, which means an utter failure of intelligence.
