5.0-LITER V8 MERCEDES 500 TE AMG HEADS TO AUCTION quote:Powered by an early M117 5.0-liter V8 featuring a secondary oil cooler, tubular headers and downpipes, this wagon also boasted a cast aluminum rear suspension, a skid plate, Recaro seats with matching door cards and an AMG body kit. The car contains plenty of other AMG equipment that the tuning house fitted to its early projects. If you click through to the auction linked in the article there's a whole lot of cool 80s-90s MBs and BMWs heated game moment fucked around with this message at 17:18 on Apr 9, 2019 |

Blue Footed Booby posted:Cross-posting from the scale modeling thread: I saw a JDM car like that in an issue of some magazine a friend of mine got me because, quote, "I had a subscription freebie, couldn't decide on anything for myself, and thought you needed monthly cars-and-boobs." It wasn't road legal because the metal panels on the windows restricted visibility, even with drilled peep holes, alas. Google isn't helping me right now, but I want to say it was a feature story in Super Street circa 2012-2013. Will try and find it...

I thought some of you here would be interested in this. I saw my dad today for the first time in a while - we live in different counties - and he gave me my birthday present early. This is an apprentice's model - a first piece of casting done by a young teenaged engineer near the start of their work with Austin. It's a model A-Series block, cast in brass from probably a wooden original. It's brass, I think, or maybe bronze, and about 1 kg, 2 lbs. I'm going to put it on my desk and store my pens in it. My dad began as an apprentice at Austin, maybe 60 years ago?

That's neat. Now I want to carve a model and cast a V8 or straight-6 or something in aluminum.

Could be done in several steps with a 3-axis and jigging or an indexing head, I think. I want to learn more about backyard casting anyway. Oh! I also have several pounds of zinc I could use!

Is it possible to use the lost wax method of casting on a 3-D printed model? That might be interesting.

Teach posted:Is it possible to use the lost wax method of casting on a 3-D printed model? That might be interesting. The 3D printer my work has (Formlabs Form2) has a couple of different resins you can use, designed specifically for that. If I ever get a workshop where I can do something like casting, it's definitely something I'm going to try. There's also ceramic resins, that you can print (and then fire in a kiln). The limiting factor, at least on our printer, is how big you can print, about a 6" cube is the max volume.

PLA burns out fine, at least for less ambitious castings where you're using plaster or something instead of thin shells of ceramic. Source: I did this:
