I don't think anyone ITT is claiming that the NCAA is a particularly good or effective developmental league, just that it is the de facto developmental league for the NFL, and as long as it exists in its current form, there's no room for another one.

There's a lot of bad things about the NFL but not allowing people straight out of high school into the league is extremely good for the players own safety

That's actually a big part of why I'm bummed the AAF crashed and burned. It was cool to have a team in another league to follow since I don't have that NCAAF tribal allegiance at all.

Of course they do. Elite recruits eyeing a career in the NFL favor programs that have success at sending players to the NFL. If you want the most talented athletes to come play for you, you have to be able to say you'll prepare them to go to the next level. Likewise this talk about players being shoehorned into whatever scheme their school uses rather than whatever suits them best... do you guys think colleges aren't out there looking to bring in the guys who fit best in their scheme? Or that it's not a big part of a player's decision to go to a particular school? They're out there showing recruits game film all the time like this is how we want to use you, you're tailor-made for this role and you're really going to show out, yada yada yada.

Every other development league in every other sport can move players up and down as needed. Given that they all have it, that implies to me that that is part of the definition of a development league. College, at best, is a prep league, which I would say is a distinct type of league.

a neat cape posted:You don't have to go to college. You just have to be three years removed from high school graduation And there's the rub right there. The NCAA is the only place to spend those years and keep getting better at football. In a true developmental league those players would make even more progress on their skills, plus they'd be earning money for themselves and their families. It would also give them a strong taste of what being in the NFL would be like and develop their professionalism Here's a problem I see: there are so many schools with football teams. The college system is the only one that can handle THAT many players. So if anything, the developmental league would take only the best players, leaving a ton of players left out without the NCAA. I'm not positive that would even be better. Another issue is that I actually do think that college classes have value and that it's important to educate players on things other than football. It's a shame that education is directly linked to indentured servitude sweet thursday posted:Capitalism is loving gross lmao.
