Plenty of doctors are also dumb as poo poo inside of medicine, too! My brother is a doctor and he really hates universal healthcare and blames minorities/black people for the huge disparities of health outcomes between US and other countries with national healthcare. He thinks America has the #1 best healthcare regardless of whatever stats I show him regarding patient outcome. He went to med school in Chicago and would constantly bring up, "black on black violence" and how black people need to be more responsible, but he couldn't be racist because he knows black people/treated black people. I don't talk to him about medicine or politics any more.

He wasn't even that great of a surgeon. The twins he first operated on ended up becoming developmentally disabled, and his attempt at separating conjoined adult twins ended in their deaths.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/news/po...YLDO/story.html

quote:

In a 1988 Bunte magazine story, Carson predicted that one of the twins would be crawling soon, while the other would need to overcome the effects of an event that occurred after the surgery when he nearly suffocated. “Both are more advanced now than we were hoping they would be,” Carson said.

But according to news media accounts two years after the surgery, one boy was discharged from the hospital with signs of severe neurological damage and remained in a vegetative state; the other was developmentally delayed.

Carson at the time acknowledged the surgery’s shortcomings. “In a technological ‘Star Wars’ sort of way, the operation was a fantastic success,” he told the Associated Press in 1989. “But as far as having normal children, I don’t think it was all that successful.”

Carson’s campaign did not respond to repeated requests for an interview.

The twins’ mother, Theresia Vosseler, described in a subsequent interview with a German magazine being racked with guilt for seeking the separation surgery that left her sons so impaired she had to send them to live in an institution.

In 1993, Vosseler told Freizeit Revue that she flew to Baltimore with “a healthy, happily babbling baby bundle and came back to Ravensburg with two lifeless, soundless, mentally and physically most severely damaged human bundles.”

“I will never get over this,” said a bitter Vosseler. “Why did I have them separated? I will always feel guilty. . . I don’t believe in a good God anymore.”

quote:

Carson again courted controversy in 2003 when he agreed to participate in the separation of the Bijani sisters, 29-year-old Iranian twins. It was the first known attempt to separate adult twins joined at the head.

They died on the operating table in Singapore after massive blood loss, a scenario that other surgeons who had refused to do the surgery had predicted. Their skulls were too thick; their brains too intimately joined.

“The German team refused to do it because doctors don’t participate in interventions that would lead to death,” said Alice Dreger, a bioethicist who wrote the 2005 book “One of Us: Conjoined Twins and the Future of Normal,” in an interview with the Globe.

“They found a happier story with Dr. Carson,” Dreger said. “He repeatedly told the press there was a 50 percent chance one of them would be disabled or die from surgery. It would have been more accurate to tell them they would die.”

I seem to remember anything over 100 is meaningless in terms of personal capabilities, but scores below that have pretty decent predictive power.

i'm no expert on iq but i'd be careful with even that as a blanket statement without accounting for socioeconomic factors. "race realists" love to say that africans have avg 80 iq or some poo poo, idk if their numbers are completely pulled out of their rear end, but i do know that raw iq scores of populations increase over time and track with poo poo like childhood nutrition. it may predict something but a 3rd world african with an 80 iq probably isn't any more developmentally disabled than an american who scored a 100 iq around 1900

Yep, anything over 90 is generally fine, the most important part of the test is whoever looks over the areas you did poorly and well in. It's not uncommon for someone with learning disabilities to have a high IQ but tank in specific parts.

so eh. context in testing is important

I took an IQ test in the late 90s and one of the questions was to point out what was missing from a picture of a phone. I stared at it for a while and then gave up, looked like a normal phone to me. The tester replied that the cord was missing. I kinda glared at him because cordless phones had been around for years at that point. He gave me a "whaddya gonna do" shrug and moved on.

no, that’s normal; one of the effects of the hormones you start getting at puberty is that testosterone makes the male torso taller and broader across the shoulders; cisgender women get shorter torsos and longer legs/wider hips relative to their height than cisgender men do. My wife is several inches taller than me, but when we sit, our heads are the same height thanks to all my height being in my torso. Her inseam is like 6” longer than mine tho. The only woman I ever dated who had an inseam as short as me was literally 5’0”.

last year some financial reporter did a story on how, after a decade of underemployment, management had forgotten how to compete for employees in a tightening labor market. they're simultaneously pissed they can't find enough good workers and indignant at the suggestion that they could offer higher pay. 🙃

This is happening at an weirdly accelerated rate where I live, in an area affected by Hurricane Michael. All the poor black people and trailer trash who used to work low-end service jobs here just left, because so much local housing was actually physically lost that rents are now impossible for anyone to afford on 8-10 bux an hour. Every hotel and apartment complex for 100 miles is occupied by FEMA refugees or oblivious, chudly vacationers, and there's just nowhere for people to go. Those of us who are still able to live and work where I do keep telling management they need to offer higher wages right now, and as they fail and fail to do so it's been really funny watching my coworkers gently caress off en masse to, for example, McD's, which is offering 14/hr in my neighborhood, whilst HR grows increasingly harrassed and hunted-looking and whines about how "these people" just don't want to work.

It's taken them about four months, but they're finally listening, and wages are finally rising-- probably because the store manager has had to clean up barf, get shopping carts from the parking lot in the FL sun, and run cash registers herself day-to-day because there's barely anyone left beneath her left to do it. It's been stressful, but oh, these dumb fuckers hath sown the wind, and when I come in to see that my fake as gently caress corporate overlord's had to respond to yet another four-alarm colon explosion in the women's bathroom while I was out, I really do savor the whirlwind.
