Post architecture you find either good or terrible or both. Art-structures like those brutalist Yugoslavian monuments is cool too. To start, I hate Brazil's National Congress building. It looks like a set from a bad 1980s science fiction/dystopian film that would have gotten a MST3k episode. One half expects to see a C-list British actor in a turtleneck fleeing down that ramp from a squad of golf cart driving bad guys after discovering the secret of The Council. I don't actually find Oscar Niemeyer's other buildings in Brasilia to be bad, they're just sort of what you expect from modernist buildings. I can't find a nice overview shot of it but the Strick House he designed for a family in the US is nice looking.

Oh, man, architecture! I love architecture. Probably my favorite building of all time is Le Corbusier's Notre Dame du Haut in Ronchamps: Doesn't look like much from the outside, right? Don't worry -- it's what's inside that counts: I also unironically love the Hearst Tower in Charlotte, NC. My brother lived in Charlotte during its construction and we always referred to it as the "coffin building". It looks like it belongs in Gotham City: Zamboni Rodeo has a new favorite as of 07:24 on Dec 27, 2019 |

The final part should be coming out soon.) Also somewhat in the vein of this thread, an urbex channel I follow recently posted this video where they explore a "ghost city" in China: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YE-Oa7mAyDU The sheer scale of the unfinished/ruined structure is mind-blowing. The interiors are all just bare concrete but to tie it loosely in with this thread some of the exteriors are fairly well finished and they're incredibly gaudy.

In the huge old GBS thread of architecture someone did a big post about a big stupid mansion thing some guy in England built to impress the dames, it was called Someone's Folly because it was so stupid, it was too big and he didn't finish it and it had big stupid bits that went nowhere. I remember a floorplan with a massive ballroom and so on. Anyone know what that was?

A very rich, very single guy decided to build an over-scaled medieval Gothic cathedral as a bachelor pad, using experimental concrete construction for a 300ft spire which continually fell down.

I used to occasionally go to Cincinnati for work, and walked past this place (The Ascent at Roebling's Bridge) in Covington, KY a number of times. Kinda interesting architecture with the building presenting a very different vista from different angles. https://www.e-architect.co.uk/america/the-ascent-kentucky

The Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw is the tallest building in the city and it's massive and hideous. For years Varsovians have made the joke that it has the best view of the city because it's the only view where you can't see the Palace of Culture and Science.

Heath posted:What's the name for that kind of heavily greened architecture? if it's something where living leafy plants are deliberately built in to a structure's architecture, but it's not a system meant to produce food or any sort of agricultural product, then there isn't really a fancy name for it. most people just call it a green wall or green facade

it's called building fabric damage and it means the building will eventually require enormously expensive repairs (which will include ripping off all the greenery) if they're going to prevent a complete destruction of the thing due to water intrusion. e. like, it's beautiful, definitely, though but really bad

Surely there's a way to design it so you can have the creeping vines AND not damage the structure.
