When he sticks to what the polls actually say he does extremely well

theflyingorc posted:Sorry, yes, I left in an errant % - the top half of states have just under 80% of the population. If people want to help make an actionable difference for 2020, Maine and NH both continue to trend in a positive direction and there are lots of important races at all levels- chiefly getting Collins out of office and hopefully getting somebody good and inspiring to run against her (the latter thing is key, Maine Dems have some really lovely potential candidates in the wings). But honestly a really big boon would be to push the state-level elections toward Dems. None of these races ever get any attention or money and you often get real psychos and local wannabe-kingpins or their kids taking the job, often running unopposed. And for every 26 year old Randian who embarrasses himself with a psychotic facebook post about consent laws or trans people many more squeak by being quietly horrid. And it would take a comparatively small amount of resources from, say, goons to swing state legislative races in Maine and NH than in MA/CT/RI/NY. Also Vermont needs attention. The poo poo that happened with their one black rep, who quit after being harassed for years while the state basically shrugged, is inexcusable and there are a whole lot of racist succdems that should be run out on a rail if we want to see more progressive victories.

I clock out of Trump soundbites for months at a time because I don't want to hear his stupid loving voice and watch his gross mouth, and each time I come back I'm always mildly shocked at how much he seems to have deteriorated. He sounds increasingly confused and generally knackered, and his patter gets more and more limping.

A lot of dogs are having to retire because they alert on marijuana and now that's legal; other dogs are being retired because the agencies have decided that floppy ear dogs are less scary than pointy ear dogs so they're shifting to all floppies; and a lot of dogs are dying from fentanyl because it's so ridiculously toxic.

I guess we're in that USPol cycle where we try to figure out ways to win at democracy without offering a majority of the country a reason to vote for us. "Medicare For All seems popular, but what about instead an imperialist corporate dictatorship with the face of a rich white gay man?", I say as I drift deeper into a fantasy world while a reality TV flimflam man rules the country

pseudanonymous posted:That's true in a sense, but nobody has been able to come up with a better system. Everyone knows Democracy has problems, literally half the population has an IQ under 100. Now IQ is largely a useless measure of anything, but even so, I'm troubled that those people get an equal say in who runs the country. And obviously, Republicans have figured out this fact. And if they fight education and health and nutrition and keep those people poor and living on soda and pop-tarts their kids will never get any smarter. But even so, what's a better system? Having some kind of voting test doesn't work out well for minority groups. You should probably take a couple steps back and reevaluate your political opinions because they're veering extremely closely to "we must eliminate the untermensch".

And unless I missed something, his take that Sanders has severely limited growth potential because there aren't enough angry Dem primary voters, which is definitely a spicy one, was not supported by reference to any polling.

Sorry, I'll admit I'm frustrated. Like, I've had enough of people going "Oh that's so terrible " when Trump does something to undermine us further. I'm vindictive and angry and want these bigoted fucks to experience a fraction of what me or anyone like me has to go through every day because they never could. Ontop of that, I feel like I can't trust the general public to do the right thing, fair system or not, because LGBT rights aren't an important enough issue for people to go out and vote, but enough of one for bigots to vote against. That's a hard thing to come to terms with, especially when it feels like every Steve King is worth two or three progressive senators because he gets so many free passes and second chances.

Kerning Chameleon posted:We'll always need oil for things like plastics, though. WTF does that have to do with my comment? A reduction in demand for a commodity will put downward pressure on the cost of that commodity which results in less revenue and thus profits and power to those who sell that commodity and unless it's the demand for those other products out strips the demand for petroleum as a power source using alternative power sources will result in less demand , lower profits and less power for petro-states. It's not that your argument is wrong, it's just not relevant to the discussion.
