Texas has a Gift Tax on vehicles, because too many people were doing that. It's only $10 and a specific form (affidavit of gift), though. Must be a relative or nonprofit. There's also a Federal gift tax that kicks in at $14,000 value (per year.) It also literally doesn't matter how much you actually pay for a used vehicle for sales tax purposes - Texas uses Presumptive Value unless the vehicle isn't in the database (25 years or older, off-road vehicles, salvaged vehicles, mechanic's lien, swaps, and government/foreclosure auctions are exempt and taxed on purchase price.) I didn't actually know the 25 year thing until today. Their calculator can't find my Crown Vic's VIN. Had that issue with some other site that used a VIN to find parts or something. Interesting. It finds my AE86 just fine ($500.) Our 2008 Kia Spectra5 is $1625. Sales tax rate is 6.25%, currently. Not the worst, I guess.

And each time I've paid the 6.25% sales tax when I've bought a used car I've been annoyed at one vehicle being taxed multiple times. (Sure, transaction vs sale or whatever.) Never the less, rich assholes being able to avoid paying into the system is bullshit.

Imperador do Brasil posted:In PA they dont even ask anymore about the relationship if you say gift, but you have to find a seller/buyer who is willing to go along. Just abolish the tax; most people skirt it somehow. Sure. If I sell a car to someone that is worth a few grand I'll do a wink and write in $250. Granted, discretion is required. Getting my $30 or $40 bucks back from a car I had licensed and tagged then hauled away was a fun one. Got the deer in headlight look at the BMV. Then I realized quite a few people don't ask for a refund on their taxes for vehicles let go.

The system is set up by the rich to benefit the rich. The entrance price is a knowledgable lawyer and accountant. That 5k bucks of state tax are for the pet dogs personal chef

MrOnBicycle posted:Wait, you pay sales tax when buying a used car privately in parts of the US? Of course. You're supposed to pay sales tax on every sale, no matter how small. Documenting private sales of small items is almost impossible, though, so it's generally ignored. A car has a title and official documented ownership, so it's much easier to collect the tax on those sales.

In Sweden we actually don't have pay any tax on private sales unless the profit is >$5200. Then it's taxed @ 30%. Which in practice means that private car sales never are reported or taxed unless it's some collectible (doubt they report it though).

You pay 8.1% at a dealer, though.
