At the risk of digging the hole deeper, there's no actual upskirting. You hit jump as the dog walks past a girl, her skirt flips maybe two inches, and your health bar goes up. That's what the panties are. In any other context, they'd be hearts. There's more sexual content in an episode of Seinfeld.

Free entertainment. People don't wanna be judged for buying things for boner reasons so they'll dig in their heels and point to other more respectable or interesting things about it. Honestly even if it's a bit gross I don't think probation really is that justified (unless the work in question is extremely problematic)

Doesn't seem like it, the developer comments on that exact question in the discussion forum. It seems like it stems from plot-related discussions of characters' dark histories, including sexual abuse (and not the deer you play as, but, from what I gather, other characters you explore the backstories of as the game goes on).

And yes, it looks pretty good. Can't beat free! Maybe I'll try it out in the next few weeks.

For people wondering why Valve doesn't do some sort of curation and constantly lets all this awful poo poo onto the store:

Basically everything Valve does is designed to be a minimal amount of work by actual humans. For being such an influential and well-known company, their workforce is relatively small. If you look at Dota2 (a Valve game) compared to LoL, Dota has a HUGE issue with people running it down the midlane to throw games, and that's because there's basically no punishment. Reports are handled automatically, so they have to be not super impactful so they can't be abused to perpetually punish someone, and over time they've only made reports do less and less. Compare that to League were an actual human watches reported players intentionally feed and issue a 3-day ban or worse. No one gets banned from Dota because they'd have to be manually banned and there's no one at Valve who manually does almost anything.

They just tried to release a game called Artifact, and if you haven't seen the thread here about it, the game completely died within a few weeks, with less than 500 concurrent players since the start of 2019 despite a late November release date. Valve put out a statement basically saying "yeah we don't know what happened but we know no one likes the game so we're gonna spend a long time fixing it don't plan on hearing from us for a while." Artifact was a card game, where they wanted people to buy and sell cards on the market while the Valve Tax gets collected on everything bought and sold.

With these two examples in mind, the Steam model becomes apparent. Why bother not allowing games on the market when you're still harvesting that 25% on every sale? Curating the store would mean they would need staffers that manually approve/reject every game, which is work they clearly have no interest in doing. They also just released a bot that automatically detects review bombs, but will also catch any legitimate reviews that occur during that time because the bot can't tell the difference and they're definitely not going to have someone manually look at the reviews to decide. Valve don't actually give a gently caress about any of the questionable/very bad stuff going up on the store because they don't have anybody in the company who actually wants to monitor that sort of stuff.

e: Valve don't even run their own Dota tournaments anymore. A few years ago they implemented an official league system, where they directly sponsored and funded a few events and let everyone else who had the funding to fill in the gaps. One of the Valve-sponsored tournaments went absolutely awfully and it reflected really poorly on Valve (look up Shanghai Major if you wanna investigate the shitshow). Their solution, next year, instead of trying to make sure that there was a consistent amount of quality at the tournaments they were sponsoring, was to totally stop sponsoring tournaments so they couldn't be held accountable if one went poorly. That left them only running The International, which this year is being held in China and is being pretty much entirely organized by a third-party, so they can't even be assed to do THAT anymore.

Yep, all of that is caused by Valve's "flat" org structure, where in theory it's an artists paradise with no bosses where you can make your dream games, but in practice it creates cliquey fiefdoms where development teams do nothing but make hats, award each other bonuses, and sniff each other's farts. Steam's success literally ruined Valve as a gaming and software company, and anyone who actually puts in the effort to try and fix that is punished for their effort.

Someone joked about SteamOS being dead but I've already done this in the Artifact thread where I talked about the incredible number of things that Valve pitches to the public that are promptly taken out behind the shed the second they aren't making as much money as they wanted. A few non-Dota examples are the Steam Controller (pretty much abandoned), Steam Link (being sold for 1$), Steam Machines (completely dead never got off the ground). The Steam VR headsets were dead for years but have finally come back but we'll see how long these last before they get bored and kill the project.

The other big issue with the flat structure is that there's no incentive to stay on a project once it starts going south because you don't want to get associated with a failed project, so you just move on as soon as things look rough.

This also speaks to why they don't make big games anymore, when they ever make games at all - no one at Valve wants to work on a big project that takes years to finish before it actually creates any profit, because there's so much pressure to create those ongoing profits when it's directly tied to your salary. In hindsight, you can see that even before they stopped making games altogether, they had been working on only smaller projects for years. Other than live services like TF2, DoTA, and CS:GO, which have continual small updates that keep the profits up, nothing Valve has worked on since HL2 has been anywhere near the scope of that game. Hell, this might actually be the REAL reason the HL2 sequels were small episodes instead of one big game!

Valve's internal politics are absolutely fascinating to me - or at least what little we know about them. It apparently REALLY sucks to work there, you have to be constantly watching your back more than you actually concentrate on doing good work. I can't wait for a tell-all book years from now.

I remember people told me I was just a conformist when I said that a flat structure is a terrible way to actually get things done, but now look who's right:smuggo:

Also I would love for a Master's of Doom-style book for Valve, there might not be as much of a "deuteragonists" like Carmack and Romero, but what little I've heard about the backroom politicking at valve makes it sound like a soap opera with nerds.

Bioware didn't explicitly have a flat system but every piece of info that came out of the Kotaku story said that they had no one willing to make leadership decisions on Anthem and look how that turned out.

Funny enough, I'm actually in a 3D modeling class this semester that works in conjunction with a computer science class and our end goal was to make a sample game in Unity, where the art teams in my class were the ones who basically told the programmers what to do. I pitched my idea to the group and I got nominated as "the boss" and initially I very much against the idea of having a strong boss role and instead we would include everyone (programmers included) on discussions on how things would work. Then after about one week I realized how desperately badly we needed someone, at the end of a meeting, to say definitely "okay considering all the opinions here's what we will do now" and started being much more willing to make big decisions. Then a month ago we all read the Anthem article and laughed about how that was almost us

To be fair, a LOT of the fuckups and aimlessness on Anthem were due to EA forcing them to use the Frostbite engine. It can't be overstated how awful that engine is to work with if you aren't Dice and making a Battlefield game. They had to scrap their original concepts in large part because of the engine - maybe if they didn't, they would have stuck with a consistent vision and made a decent game. Not to mention all the times they had to pull people off the project to concentrate on DA:I and ME:A due to Frostbite causing development issues...! Plus, the release date was mandated by EA.

I mean, it is a lot of speculation, but I think it's entirely possible that the Frostbite engine alone is the biggest seed issue that caused all of Bioware's current issues. Maybe they wouldn't have lost all their best talent without it!
