yeah the helium thing is a lol airgas is force majeure'ing helium tank rentals unless you purchase x amount per year, and it won't be long until they just stop renting it not that there's a lot of people welding aluminum or whatever else helium is the only gas and renting it from airgas but still a hefty lol that the gop wanted to burn up the national reserve to own the libs

I still haven't heard a good explanation of why Uber is so unprofitable. The drivers front all the vehicle costs so what do they have for overhead other than servers and accompanying computer janitors?

There's no room for profit, and the reason it's so low is to choke out competitors that are trying to do the same tactic.

the reason Uber is losing money is they have to recruit drivers constantly. they give referral bonuses to existing drivers and constantly have recruitment bonuses for new ones. they also nearly continuously run "next ten rides/deliveries 50% off!" where they make up the difference in an attempt to get people hooked. I bet they have an income pattern where a relatively small number of whales who use it for loving everything account for an extreme share of their revenue. I've seen people online say they spend $500-700 per month on Uber.

Replenishes nitrogen in the soil that the corn strips. crop rotation and farming ecosystem science in any setting is some amazing rear end poo poo, it sucks that we use corn for everything and so the market demands we lock it in

It's absolutely one of those things that should be nationalized by the Department of Transportation so the fares stay cheap and the drivers are the ones getting paid, not lovely shareholders or executives. I'm going to SF at the end of the month and am probably gonna end up using it a bit there I'm guessing.

Uber can’t get to sustainable by just cutting the money that goes to “lovely shareholders and executives”; they need to raise prices.

those electric scooters look absolutely ridiculous but they do kinda seem to be a pretty good solution to the "a bit far to walk, but the bus doesn't go there" issue. although they might not be financially sustainable either. they used to be loving everywhere in my neighborhood but I haven't seen one for at least a month.

You can buy those same scooters for under 500 bucks, which in theory seems like a very solid urban alternative to a car but I do wonder about the durability considering they were made to be parts of a huge fleet that could afford some amount of them out at any given time for maintenance

I dunno, I think there's something to be said for the accessibility, the everywhereness and the flexible response of something like Uber. Both in terms of very easily allowing people with cars to earn an extra couple of bucks, offering premiums when demand is high, giving people a transport option they can use almost everywhere etc. It's handy. It's nothing compared to public transport for getting x million people to work and back every day in a busy metropolis, but operated as a public utility I can see it has a use case with advantages over the taxi medallion system.
