Wait, why wouldn't that be a thing any more? Putting hot things in your fridge warms the fridge making the appliance work harder and heats anything nearby, this might put the food into the "danger zone" and encourage bacteria growth.
Or every class I've ever taken on food handling and health inspector I've ever dealt with are just saying it out of habit?
It's also unsafe for the food itself since it will sit in the danger zone longer.
Buy your Aunt some smaller tupperware and instead of one big bowl try several small ones.

Modern fridges chill more efficiently and effectively than older fridges. Back in the day when the ice box was this little box in the corner of the fridge you could only access if you opened the whole fridge. Now days baring stuff like mini-fridges, they work really well at chilling stuff down quickly.
I remember my great aunt making orange juice from those frozen concentrates way back. She'd do it for me mostly on days when I'd mow the lawn, but it took near all day for it to chill down to refreshingly cold vs now when it's like ready in an hour or so

Guys the "modern refrigerators" argument is both problematic from a privilege perspective and only partially correct. Handing out advice based on your standard of living is never as helpful as you think it is and even modern refrigerators still run into problems with temperature if overloaded or if filled with hot food so "it "should be ok" isn't good enough.

For safety's sake alone cool your food at the very least before putting it in your fridge, use multiple containers and never put the cooling food near or below meat.

I had no idea why it was a thing, I just always let my food cool before putting it in the fridge. I guess I assumed it was about not loving up the seals on the containers by parts of it cooling too quickly, but I never really thought about it

This is a fair point, your fridge may be old, not working properly, or any number of things. And it is best to let your food cool down before putting it in, especially if you have something susceptible to spoilage like raw meat in the fridge.

I don't mean to sound snippy, sorry, but better safe than sorry, never assume that something will do the work for you. The health inspector that taught my first class had so many great stories about local restaurants. He had pictures he took with a lady who had cut her hand while sectioning chicken and he's holding up her hand like a trophy, it's wrapped in paper towels and still blood is flowing down her arm. The entire pile of chicken wings was COVERED in blood and the cooks would grab from the pile.

My favorite thing I personally witnessed was a bar that repurposed their broken glasses as ice scoops. Clear glasses that got chipped or broke weren't thrown out: they were used to scoop ice. This is, apparently, super common and REALLY depressing.

Someone who worked at Action Park (the infamously dangerous water park in New Jersey) in the early 90s before its closure had a blog where former employees told stories of their time there. When a lightbulb broke in the ice cream cooler, the teenage manager tried to tell them to just throw out the top and keep going.

Christ. When I worked at Outback one of the worst things to happen during a busy shift was a glass breaking anywhere near the ice bin because we needed to stop whatever we were doing, drain the bin, clean it, then refill it. Fistfights would nearly start over someone in a hurry just scooping ice with the glass (to save time) because of the risk.

And broken glasses tended to lead to more broken glasses - they didn't like to order new boxes, so as glasses broke over time, we'd have to start grabbing glasses just out of the dishwasher, eventually those glasses would be hot, and way more likely to break as they went from the hot washer thing straight to ice and cold beverages.

Fun times.

I don't think McKinsey is intentionally evil, but take a look at Buttigieg's extremely data-driven view on life (at the expense of proper understanding or human factors) and you see it there too. They'll work with anyone for anything regardless of how lovely it is and never take actual human lives into account before making a profitable decision.
