Did anyone else listen to the Terry Gross/Howard Stern interview today? It was so interesting if youve listened to Howard Stern at all and anyone that regularly listens to Fresh Air will know why. It was actually so long that there will be a second half tomorrow and I cant wait. I stopped listening to Howard when he went to satellite just out of laziness and now I think that I missed out on a lot because of the changes he went though due to that among other reasons he talks about in the interview. I find the human condition endlessly fascinating and appreciate good interviews and the show was two of the all time greats from opposite sides of the spectrum. Highly recommend it after the whole thing is released to listen to as a podcast probably tomorrow sometime after the second half of it airs.

I specifically subscribed to SiriusXM for Howard, but I don't listen to him nearly as much these days. Mostly because it's so hard to follow a show when I'm in and out of the car constantly all day (mine is a streaming-only subscription, so I can play the on-demand episodes the day after, but the Android app is kinda garbage and loses my place frequently). I still keep an active SiriusXM subscription, but more because they have so many channels that it's hard to get bored. Also it's so drat easy to get a retention plan, $5.99/mo is basically the difference between me eating garbage food for one meal vs cooking at home.

But I heard the teasers for it on my local NPR station today; I'm hoping the podcast version comes out like normal Fresh Air podcasts.

According to bmi charts which I don't usually care about I am enjoying the fact that technically I'm not obese anymore, merely overweight. Haven't been this low since maybe middle or early high school? I don't know.

I've been getting calls from my medical insurance for the past week about needing to make an IMPORTANT APPOINTMENT with my doctor.

Finally called them back. They want me to get my BMI checked. Seriously? That was done during my physical a few months ago, you dumb fucks. Had I called them back before my appointment yesterday, I probably could have turned it into some kind of "reward" (they sent me a debit card that they put rewards on for various things, up to $500 a year I think?). That card can be used for copays (n/a for my PCP visits since my copay is $1, and it costs them more to take the $1 than to just eat it), premium payments (that's always good), or anything at Walmart.

My BMI (29) says I'm almost obese. BMI doesn't factor in things like how much muscle you have, how large your frame is, etc. Depending on the brand of pants, I wear either a 32" or 34" waist (down from 40 inch several years ago - now THAT was obese), but I can toss my (admittedly skinny) GF over my shoulder with one arm. My doctor thinks I should lose about 25 pounds (which is about where I want to be), but if you go by BMI, I should lose 40+. And going by BMI, my high school weight (and what I weighed through much of my 20s thanks to copious amounts of meth) was normal (120-130 lbs @ 5'7").

Applebees Appetizer posted:

Howard is the best interviewer ever by far. I had satellite for awhile but they kept raising the price so I said gently caress that, the only thing I listened to was howard but it was probably worth it anyway, I miss listening to him.

Sign up for a 90 day trial using a different email account; a week or two before it's set to bill at full price, call and say you want to cancel, say it's just too expensive. You'll get kicked over to an "account specialist" (read: retention dept). Their first offer last time was $5.99/mo for a year. Their last offer is usually $30 for 6 months, but it takes so much more arguing to get to that point that I'd rather just eat the extra $12/year.

This is assuming you're doing a streaming plan. My car had optional factory XM, but I don't have the factory stereo anymore, and the add-on tuner is specific to the 06-07 Ion (i.e. impossible to find). So long as I'm in an area with decent data coverage, the streaming plan works great. Even though the streaming plans actually cost them more to service, they seem to be a lot more prone to negotiate on them vs actual satellite plans.

My stereo does support a SiriusXM module, but the only way I'd do that is if I could somehow tie it to the factory combo XM/OnStar antenna. Actually finding the XM/OnStar combo antenna is also a pain in the dick, since they only used the specific antenna I have for a few years (I have the first generation of the plastic roof antenna; stock it only does GPS and CDMA [OnStar], you replace the fin to add XM).

That's pretty generous for a 1979. I had a 1980 F-150, 1979 build, with the 351M (which was a destroked 400), with a C6. It could yank a house off of its foundation just above idle (... when new anyway), but I think it was rated at 130 hp. It didn't go anywhere fast unless you dropped it off of a cliff, had two 19 gallon tanks, and I normally got 6-8 mpg. And I'm pretty sure a whoooole lot of those torques and ponies escaped in the 16 years before I got it. That C6 was a trooper though - I scraped almost 2 inches of solid sludge out of the transmission pan (it had the original Ford gasket on it, so... never changed, had a trailer hitch, and the fluid was essentially tar the first time I dropped the pan). When I first got it, I'd start it, set the parking brake, and throw it in reverse... then go hang out inside until I heard the KACHUNK of the sloppy rear end taking up slack and hear the RPMs drop. That meant I could finally back it out of the driveway... usually took another couple of minutes before it'd go forward in more than 1st gear. That's in the summer. Winter took a good 30+ minutes before the transmission would do anything except laugh at you.

For comparison. the 2.2L in my Saturn is rated at 140 hp (and it's only rated that low because the intake/exhaust are significantly different vs most of the other cars it wound up in.. most of them gave it an extra 10 hp). It also gets MPG in the low 20s, even with a rusted out fuel line making sure the LR tire can't get traction (it'll probably be back in the mid-high 20s city once I fix that, probably even tickle 30s on the highway).

Last month I bitched about my Ford Escape being properly hosed. It was. I got it back today, after 35 days in the shop (unfortunately lemon law doesn't apply in my instance, I did call a lawyer to see if I had a case.)

They had to replace the entire long block on the engine and the vacuum pump as well. The cylinder heads on my old engine were proper hosed and leaked coolant into the 3rd cylinder, and the vacuum pump was leaking oil like nobody's business. So I got a real champ of a vehicle, I guess.

I'm just glad it was under warranty, replacing the engine would have probably just totaled the car and I'd have to be shopping for a new one. Now, the loaner F150 Lariat the dealership gave me was really nice...

Apparently I've been late 24 times and called in sick 10 times. 24 loving times late? That's not even remotely accurate, I can count the number of times I've been late on one hand and don't even need all the fingers to do it. As for the sick days, I've literally been making GBS threads liquid for two months and have called when it's been really bad so I don't dispute those.

So the first course of action HR takes isn't finding out why an employee is calling in sick so much but to tell them "stop calling in sick or we're firing you."

Not sure what this means for me...they will certainly need an onsite IT person for day to day operations, but it could potentially mean a drop in title for me (I'm currently working somewhere between a systems admin and engineer - effectively I'm a one-man IT department for a company of ~100.) OTOH I'd probably maintain my current salary (lowest IT salary I could find on glassdoor was a bit more than I make now) and get a large block of vacation time and benefits worth buying, but I'm kind of bristling at the prospect of going back to work in a 100% MS shop.

Edit: Before I even got to play with the tv today I put a second coat of primer on some more interior doors and touched up the primer all over the house to prep for the trim white out that I plan to start tomorrow. Then I went outside, raked out a bunch of brush and crap away from the house and set up some bins to store the lava rock we're pulling out of the front yard. After that I dragged about a ton large fallen branches to the junk pile and pulled 50 little tree saplings out of the ground and ended up clearing a huge spot in the back yard. Progress!

How’s the reliability on these newer Chevy Colorado/Canyons? I want a cheapish used truck to tow a 6500lb trailer and they seem like good options.

For the first time ever in my working life I've been written up. As in, received written notice that I am on notice.

I find it weird that HR gives a poo poo/keeps an eye on this. It's not really their business until a supervisor brings it to their attention (which could be the case I suppose.) You'd think that'd be up to the department manager, for example if you work in the service department here and you're 5 minutes late three days in a row, the service manager is going to give you an earful. Me, I can waltz in an hour late and my supervisor could care less as long as my poo poo's getting done.

But yeah, the first thing you should do is punch in and the last thing you should do is punch out. If you would have gotten hurt cleaning up your workspace, I'm sure someone as lovely as your HR person could have tried to find a way to stick you with responsibilty since you weren't clocked in. (I don't know if workman's comp is a thing in Australia or not, so that may be a moot point.)

Also I do payroll at the dealership and going through and fixing thirty missing time punches every Monday morning is annoying AF so you'd probably be one of the many on my poo poo list :v:

A clever way for insurance companies to avoid paying as much as possible.

Between that, deductibles and "coinsurance" its not uncommon to need to spend over $10k out of pocket (annually) before your insurance starts paying for "everything."

And by "everything" I mean "technically is on the hook for it, but will likely come up with a half-dozen reasons why a medically necessary and very expensive procedure or medication isn't covered."

Wow, you Americans really do have it rough, eh?

This is the only job I've ever had where you have to punch out and back in for breaks and lunch, that's where most of my gently caress ups happen wrt the clock.

Last night I had one last weird margarita Gose thing left, and poured it into a pint glass.

And then I remembered I had some tequila.

Delicious.

Avery El Gose + Tequila is fantastic.
