I picture Prester Jane typing these posts into an Android phone from like 2013, one of several that she has in use at any one time. She’s in a parking garage in a hoodie, second or third floor. Maybe top floor if it’s sunny. Probably not, she prefers the abstract feeling of security that the roof and honeycomb of floors provide, also it’s like 50 degrees out and windy.
There’s another phone in the pouch with a twitter client open. Also Pokémon Go, but she hates to admit to using a piece of software so intrusive, so tied to the system.

That’s why it’s on the burner

She appreciates the therapeutic nature of it.

Its self care she muses. Plus she’s so loving close to evolving another Sunglasses Blastoise and those cats are adorable.

Maybe she’s typing this out from the drivers seat of a 2004 Hyundai Elantra. Maybe it’s the passenger’s seat of a gen 2 Prius. Is she waiting for somebody? 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏿‍♀️ How long has the car been parked there?

Maybe she isn’t in a car at all. Somedays I picture her on an adult-sized BMX bike, like a 26er. Like something you might buy from City Grounds for three to six hundred bucks.

Or maybe on a beat up city bike, or a mountain bike from the 90s- especially one on fat road tires. Or a mutt bike cobbled from parts. But not a cool bike, more like the bike a moderately celibate dude who smells like feet and root vegetables and lives in Cambridge MA might ride. A bike owned by a man who cried during Isle of Dogs and then masturbated before falling asleep. A bike you could leave outside in the right neighborhood, but you won’t if you can because you care. Like the kind of bike Casual Encountess might help somebody build but not one they’d care to own themselves. Bikes for women who own cds of a cappella music.

Homely bike. Elegant and pure in its homeliness. Maybe it’s got panniers maybe it’s got fenders and a mirror. Maybe it had all of those things at some point and now it has duct tape residue in various spots. The type of bike a mentally ill person rides. Or a socialist. Or both. The bike equivalent of a 2002 Subaru minus the fandom.

Nah. I’d like to idealize her on that BMX. Because she probably deserves a sweet bike. Something with lightning bolts down the front fork and neon blue gummy grips.

But the real question- is there a cat with her? Maybe if she’s in the Prius. Or the Elantra. Probably not on a bike, they don’t have that kind of bond and it wouldn’t be cat safe anyway.

But she’s definitely on a phone and definitely in a parking garage. And the reasons are maybe urgent or mundane and maybe there’s a lot of reasons for a lot of things that led to this particular parking garage at this particular hour. Or maybe she’s in a library or inside a house and all of this is off-base. But regardless, the time to stand up and fight is now, and she knows this and some of the jabronis having a vapid-rear end Harvard derail know it as well.

Prester Jane flips to the music app. She’s listening to Pavement. And also Garbage. And some Hole. Courtney Love gets a bad rap but not from me. Her earbuds are close to fraying. Like everything else, they’re disposable. Temporary. Like everything else in this powderkeg world.

Two years into the unending days. When time stretched and congealed and months passed like years and weeks went by in a blink. Two years past the year of the comet. When the orange black swan came and the fascists declared open season on the immigrant and on the womb.

Another compaction cycle will happen she thinks. And that’s how I picture Prester Jane.

Y’all need to get over the idea that there’s some kind of meritocracy at work that makes it hard to believe a high profile chudlet could get into Harvard. Your reaction to finding this out should be “Of course, all the best war criminals went to Harvard.”

Or not, I mean, I don’t want to be your brain cop or whatever, but the world is much less surprising when you realize that to be rich or work with ruling class institutions it’s about class signaling and compliance much more than it is competence.

This kid is going to run as a right wing senator who wants to ban doggystyle in about 15 years, of course he’s Harvard material.

Munkeymon posted:

No, I assume that'll happen either way, though there are degrees of 'riled up' and that's worth considering.

What I worry about is that the average person who cares more about their favorite sportsball or movie franchise than the kiddie concentration camps is going to see some version of 'Senate finds Trump not guilty' and say 'oh OK no crimes then 🤷‍♂️ I guess I can vote for the guy'. I think the way to prevent that is to make the crimes common knowledge, so the Senate is either forced to remove (super unlikely) or makes a bunch of average people mad that they're ignoring the crimes. Then he should at least lose pretty hard next year.

My big concern with that is, well, how much more visible can politics get? I feel like the Trump administration has been exceptionally pervasive in the lives of every day Americans - if the average person still doesn't have some inkling of how things are going and how they've developed, well... what could change that?

I think the most reasonable conclusion here is that it’s a real acceptance letter. Sorry guys.

If it makes you feel better, I know a TON of unsuccessful people who went to Harvard. For example, my parents, who are wonderful lovely people but have literally no money or prospects for the future because of their terrible financial choices.

Video games will always draw a disproportionate amount of people with conservative mindsets because violent conflict is much easier to model and much more viscerally satisfying in games than peaceful cooperation, and appealing to and promoting narcissism and the obvious self-importance of the player above all other persons is fundamental to the medium.

Most of what I've seen has said that Kyle was basically the "that guy" the class before the shooting. You know, the guy who's entire personality is to be a contrarian edgelord taking whatever awful position gets them the most attention.

So this isn't some trauma-induced extended PTSD episode as much as him getting a bigger audience. In a happier timeline where the shooting never happened he'd be planning his first "affirmative action bake sale" this fall.
