For me regular soda and the 'zero' style ones leave me with a filmy sugar mouthfeel that standard diet just doesn't. I've never liked Mt. Dew and the only diet soda I really disliked was Tab. But Diet Coke, Diet Dr. Pepper, Diet RC are all fine with me.

Screaming Idiot posted:He recently pushed a law to keep people from smoking inside their own homes, which is kinda lovely since this is exactly the kinda of "nanny state" poo poo they're supposed to be against. It's purely a ploy to make life for the impoverished just a little bit worse and to make it easier to evict them. A friend of my mother across town was evicted recently because he smoked just outside his front door, but not regulated twenty-five feet away. I love needing an air purifier to not have asthma attacks in my own home because my upstairs neighbor is allowed to smoke in his own home. The only problem with the law is it only applies in government housing.

Inside the cabinet were two wills from 2010. One claimed that a will that had been written years prior was “no good.” The other had a notary’s signature.

If the government really cared about your breathing problems, they'd cutting back on pollution regulation and give better access to healthcare and have better programs to help people get off smoking while coming down on tobacco lobbyists. The government doesn't want to help, the government seeks only to carve away at the liberty and well-being of society and the individual both in order to serve corporate interests.

As another person who has serious problems with cigarette smoke, gently caress you. Saying that cigarette smokers should be more important than those around them (who ALSO have lovely health care and little opportunity to move) is pretty hosed up no matter how you try to justify it with 'government bad.' It sucks for your mother's friend but you actively ignore the people around him and try to downplay their own issues just to fit your narrative.

Listen, guys. I understand that youve given a variety of legitimate reasons why smoking bans might actually be about peoples health and well-being, but I saw this episode of South Park once that really opened my eyes. Im sorry that youre curled up on the floors of your apartments trying to stay beneath the smoke layer so you wont cough until you bleed, but its not really about you.

Yeah but in the end, he did save Coke. Accelerationism worked.

Saying that cigarette smokers should be more important than those around them (who ALSO have lovely health care and little opportunity to move) is pretty hosed up no matter how you try to justify it with 'government bad.' I'm not downplaying anyone's issues, but banning cigarettes doesn't do anything about the wider problem. It's a "liberal" solution, in that it just punishes the symptoms to appease some while leaving the real problems untouched. It's the same drat thinking behind the "tough on crime" and "war on drugs" narrative faux progressives like to push. What, are we going to support banning alcohol in public housing? After all, broken bottles can be a safety hazard, and if a poor has drinking money, they have money for non-public housing, am I right? Or hey, how about peanut butter? Lots of kids with a terrible allergy to peanuts, can't risk them coming into trace contact with it. Or how about animals? Lots of people with pet allergies, and they can cause lots of damage and make lots of messes. And let's not forget about marijuana, the devil's lettuce! And so on, and so forth. I don't like smoking. My parents both smoked and it's left me and my sister with lasting health problems, and my mother has serious COPD that I'm pretty sure is going to eventually kill her. Banning cigarettes from public housing isn't going to get her to quit, though. Kicking elderly old men onto the street who, if they quit smoking, might add about ten minutes onto their lifespan isn't the way. Instead of threatening to evict people for a disgusting habit, we need stronger reforms to curtail people from getting addicted in the first place while providing free smoke cessation assistance. Tex Avery posted:Building codes on the US are surprisingly lax when it comes to walls. Throw up some lovely, paper thin insulation and drywall over that and presto! The walls between your units are up to code. This, too. Public housing needs better ventilation and sturdier construction. If public housing was so dead-goddamn-set on having breathable air they might do something about the black mold growing in my bathroom that I've spent almost three hundred bucks in the past three years trying and failing to clear.

Man I remember the first time I drove a car without a cat, what a rush. Glad I weaned myself off that chemically addictive experience before the environmental laws kicked in. Second hand smoke is assault but the solution to housing offenders is probably carting them to cessation therapy and replacing their smoke products with smokeless instead of making them literally homeless.

In this metaphor we'd be throwing people who drove those cars into jail, but doing literally nothing to the manufacturers or places selling them.

The United States is all about punishment, not fixing the actual problems. I am loving glad smoking is getting banned everywhere, but I also know it is the sledgehammer solution to the problem. My wife has asthma and so did her dad. Going to restaurants with them 15 years ago was horrible. We'd have to sit in the tiny four booth non-smoking section and get second-hand smoked to death. I don't smoke, I've never smoked; I shouldn't end up smelling like smoke just because someone else is addicted to nicotine and can't wait loving 30 minutes. It would take a generational shift to address the problem where it belongs: the corporations who profit off of addiction and actively encourage it. Right now, we can treat the symptom and improve the health of hundreds or thousands of innocent bystanders.
