The whole Dark Tower debacle is loving strange because it feels so familiar. Like almost the exact same thing happened with another beloved series stuck in development hell for years before finally getting a bastardized version with a good cast. Does anyone know what I’m talking about?

Am I misremembering a King story (possibly from Nightmares & Dreamscapes) where a guy starts dying because he committed murder? It's like how a bumblebee dies if it tries to attack, and this was some sort of drug in the water that was meant to stop people killing each other. The story was a letter from the guy as he loses his mind after killing his brother. Am I just making this all up? EDIT: Nevermind, it was the aforementioned 'The End of the Whole Mess', except minus the 'this will kill you if you kill', and moreso just 'this will kill you'. So where the gently caress am I getting this bumblebee/die-if-you-kill memory? Is that sort of thing mentioned in the story? Man, it's been too long. Pilchenstein posted:The Dark Tower was astonishingly bland for like, 95% of its runtime but the fight between him and McConaughey at the end was worth the wait imho. If I'm being honest I'd have to say I enjoyed The Dark Tower, but it's a movie that's really stuck in no man's land in terms of finding an audience. To really enjoy it I think you have to be a big fan of the book series, so that you can notice where the movie is doing little nods to the books and also where the movie is diverging from the books. But then, it diverges from the books in some pretty frustrating ways, so for a fan that can also be alienating. So it's gonna probably piss you off either way, whether you've never read a single page of the books or if you're a Dark Tower fanatic. The way Roland takes out Walter in the end was really cool though, hard to imagine anyone not enjoying that bit.

Obviously, there are no budget constraints.

There's a whole bunch of paintings in the room which seem to have aggressive, violent themes but have a look at the painting immediately behind her, almost hidden from view: There's also the scene in the New York public library where he gets attacked by a guy who doesn't buy into the reputation of the Baba Yaga and learns the hard way by being force fed a book on Russian folk tales.

They should just make a Dark Tower show based on one of Roland's loops that is different from the books. Casually hint from time to time, out of nowhere, that things seem familiar That would be their best excuse for diverging from the books. Also, I want a whole season about young Roland. I might be in the minority that loved Wizard and Glass because of that seemingly pointless jaunt into his past.

It would make for a really interesting dynamic for book fans where you're not only watching to see the books adapted on-screen, you're also keeping an eye out for changes and then trying to predict how those changes might effect events down the line.

I rewatched the film recently as I'd finished a reread of the books and it has some very great parts but doesn't really work as a film. Dakota Blue Richards had the worst cockney accent I've ever heard and she drops it in the latter half of the film and does much better from then on.

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy makes me angry. We finally get a big budget adaption and it’s so...bland, that it kills the trilogy in its crib. It’ll be another generation before its attempted again. There should be a do-over requirement for any beloved property that film makers gently caress up the first time.
