Hate crime laws imply a specific type of intent: the intent to terrorize minorities. This is important in distinguishing crimes against a person versus crimes against a person who is a representative of a specific, usually minority group (especially with the intent to silence or terrorize that group). They serve a very useful purpose.

But really, you can apply this logic to all laws in general. Once a state decides to abuse the system, no system will protect you. Once the government was able to decide what a "crime" was, there was inevitably going to be the risk that a hostile government would abuse the legal system for its own ends.

A Reversal of Fortune, Perhaps?
I have a question about a thing.

A few days ago on MSNBC I heard a random guy in rural Pennsylvania say he was disappointed that Trump hadn't really brought back manufacturing and coal mining as promised but had only brought low-wage warehousing jobs instead, and complained that people he knows can't take those jobs because they don't pay enough to support a family. (Unclear if he was employed)

My question is, did he have a basis for claiming Trump brought warehousing jobs to Pennsylvania? It's a rather specific policy question so it's a longshot anyone here would know. Trump supporters and sympathizers are generally full of poo poo, yes, but this guy apparently lived in the local area and so it's a mistake to dismiss the claim without specific knowledge of the subject matter.

I looked into it and found local news articles about a Pennsylvania state initiative that has been credited with bringing warehousing jobs, but nothing Trump related. Other local news articles say the trend got started around 2013, focused around Cumberland county and the I-81 area because it's a natural desirable area for a logistics hub. Amazon wanted to locate there. But maybe there's some administration policy initiative that could've had an impact I didn't find.

The biggest problem I see with this claim is its general implausibility. Changing US policy to bring jobs to any specific place is generally tough, costly, difficult to assess whether the price is worth it, and 'freebie' cases where it clearly makes sense are rare. Furthermore Trump has barely been in office 2 years which according to economic consensus is barely enough time for policies implemented at the start of his administration to have had a significant impact. It could be another disconnect between political perception and economic reality, "The president always gets credit/blame for the economy" effect (economists have a shorter term than that) but I liked to know for sure.

Reminder that the US defensive alliance with Japan is based on either law or treaty (law I think) under US law. So if Japan got attacked and Trump chose not to help it would be illegal. Theoretically Trump would receive a court order to comply with the terms of the alliance, and if he refused, it could be another impeachable offense.

Business just happens, man. Whether stuff grows or dries up all depends on the needs and desires of companies, not on what Trump says. There was nothing he could do to revive coal because coal is not profitable or in that high a demand. It's more expensive than other processes in the biggest industry that would have a demand; Making electricity. They'd have to buy coal, have a place to store the thousands of tons needed, plus equipment and staff to constantly take care of it. Then the health issues it causes would hurt employees who are generally well off and require more money to pay for their health. And once used, they need to have a place to store the biproducts like ash, which is a nightmare to store safely both environmentally and safely.

Morons that listened to his "I'll make coal great again" rants bought into it all the way because they wanted a lazy man answer for their issues rather than have to learn another way of living. Same as those dupe steel workers that thought he'd save and revitalize the steel industry. It's just not going to happen because there are cheaper, easier, and more economical ways of making it.
Rather than moving on to different employment, they all wanted a lazy answer so they didn't have to do anything. Trump's promises were simply bullshit. Even companies he did meet with (and made a big poo poo storm about on twitter) continued to shut down or lay off employees simply because the expenses they had and the demand for their products is not eternal. This was all as stupid a dream as the morons that thought the president could control gas prices (aside from kicking off wars in oil countries to make it cost more)

TL;DR Trump is a conman and anyone that thinks he controls what business does is a moron. He couldn't even control what his own businesses did (hence why they've all tanked)

Honestly I wish someone had gotten it on recording. I've seen people take those plastic water bottles into security checkpoints at airports and become all shocked and appalled that these would be tossed out because they clearly aren't drinks.
I've also watched coworkers walk past "No food or drinks on pack floor" at Vlasic, so they'd go through with empty bottles, fill them up in the sink on the other side of the door, then head to the line.

In college, a lot of times, non-water drinks were banned in my classes simply because water was a lot easier to clean up and wouldn't stain a carpet or attract bugs if they were spilled and no one cleaned them up. I wonder if that's why some people make that distinction between them in their heads.
