don't even watch the answer jesus christ it's bad. 3's ending is perfect, just leave it.

I played FES a long long time ago and fell back in love with the series with 5. I'm going back through 4 for the first time, and it completely holds together as a modern game, especially with a widescreen patch and 5x native resolution.

The only thing I think 5 completely blows away 4 with is the soundtrack, but 5's soundtrack has ruined me for all other game soundtracks forever, even Meguro's other work.

Decided to deal with the party AI in 3FES and now I'm OK with it. Sure it'll screw me over sometime but :xcom:

Just let yourself become a worthless person!
Hot take:

While the party AI in Persona 3 can be frustrating, in general it reinforces the themes of the game, and the game suffers when it's removed. It makes the party members feel much more like separate people from the protagonist; you're playing as the main character, not as the spooky ghost of SEES who possesses everyone during combat.

Counterpoint: the "separate people" idea was bad from the start.

Just don't do Ken's Social Link if you do the Female MC route.

While almost all of her other unique ones are better, that may be the single worst social link in 3/4/5.

This. The extra AI options make them perfectly decent.

I just wish the extra options were in other games. For my next run of P4G I think I'll use AI control partners just to test it out but it will be annoying because they only give you the most basic commands. If they are gonna keep AI control in there, why remove the greater variety of control?

That is a really bad hot take. The power dynamic is nowhere near as hosed up as with Ken, or even the adult P5 romances. Futaba isn't as broken as people seem to think, she's portrayed as being awkward and prone to panic attacks but not helpless. Sojiro also says explicitly that he is okay with the two of you dating so you're just flat out lying there

yokay, well her whole social link is about her slowly learning how to socialize without literally clinging to your side in fear, and dealing with her separation anxiety coupled with that. it culminates with her finally becoming comfortable in public and being able to spread her wings without you. you then have a choice. do you A: stay a friend and support her growth or B: gently caress her brains out

also (spoiler)

but yeah no it's not nearly as hosed up as ken, that was hyperbolic

Yeah, to be honest, the vast majority of the romances in P5 weird me out. Most of them involve abusive adults no matter how they try to gussy it up.

Its still bad.

Like Kawakami/Joker is on the level of P3/Ken in terms of creepiness and hosed up power dynamics considering she's his teacher and someone Joker has life ruining blackmail on.

Then you have the drunk reporter who has to pretend to date a high schooler because...

Or the doctor performing dubious medical experiments on and eventually loving her patient.

Normalizing any of that, or the pedophile poo poo in Ken's link, is real bad.

With one hand he saves gebs. With the other he commits goblin genocide. A true neutral.

I'm torn on the adult confidants. I liked the theme of them mostly starting out as an exploitative or seedy relationship like Iwai involving you with his Yakuza past and breaking the law but as you gain levels in them your relationship actually changes to one of mutual respect and friendship with the big caveat that you didn't pick the romance options. All of them have backgrounds of being on the fringes of polite society and it shows.

Except Sun who owns.

That and the fact that her ability is by far the least useful in the game for all but the least competent stealth gamers.

The tears of time
I think it makes sense for some Jokers to be dating an older woman. He isn't a role model, You can make him do and say a lot of unethical things if you want. The game doesn't force you into any of the romantic s-links, and it isn't treated as an endorsement. That's why it's rated for adults. People are also being much grosser about it than anything implied by the game, which leaves 99 percent of the "relationships" to your imagination. It's way tamer than teacher-student relationships you'd see on a TV show like Riverdale, and It's not remotely comparable to the gay-guys-accost-Ryuji scene (IE embarassing and shouldn't be there.)

IMO it's extremely having your cake and eating it too, to have the first arc be about an abusive teacher and how bad that is, and then let you gently caress your teacher, because she's hot so it's different.

In theory the actual difference is that Kamoshida uses his power and privelage to force himself on students, whilst Joker has to convince Kawakami three times to get her to even consider a relationship.

In practice this is still terrible horseshit that shouldn’t be in the game outside of maybe a when you’re Older and not my student response.

It’s also real disappointing we got romances with adult women before we got romances with other teen guys, Ryuji Yusuke and Mishima should have all been romantic options.
