Some years ago, my parents bought a shed from their next-door neighbor. Cleaning it out today, we found a box of 1957-60 hot rodding magazines.

All together, they make a ten-inch stack, about 50 of 'em. Eventually I'll get around to scanning them or selling them to somebody who wants to put in the effort.

Cover story of Car Craft, September 1957:

Overhead valves were apparently new and interesting when my parents were in elementary school.

Oh, that's cool. My dad has a file cabinet drawer full of car mags, but they're all form the '60s-early '70s (still good, though.)
And yeah, overhead valves were expensive luxury car territory until the small-block Chevy made it common in 1955.

Too many gratuitous CGI cars disintegrating as they flip down the straights but the driving sequences look more authentic than the Lauda/Hunt movie that came out a ways back. Plus who doesn't love the cars it's based on. :allears:

Usually when smoothing an engine bay all the goodies get put into the arches. Sometimes they build the inner arches out into the bay to help cover everything. And then sometimes you get this kinda madness.

Oh, dangit. Where in TX was he?

Something my buddy and I saw on one of our home Depot runs:

That's a friggin' later Model T. Definitely a driver - it had minor leaks, wear, etc, and had been outfitted with Wilwood disc brakes in the back, and turn signals. Already had electric start from the factory, the dude said.
The rear disc setup really intrigued me - I didn't get a picture, because I'm dumb. It basically was a huge solid disc that incorporated the original mechanical drum brakes in the hat, the same way modern cars tend to do parking brakes, which ends up making the rotor something like 13" or better. He said they're *way* overkill, with the light weight of the car + skinny tires. He fired it up to leave and it just ticked over like a sewing machine. So cool.

Those are just close-out panels, however, the inner wheel wells on those is actually that far in - the panel just takes that line forward and back. Presumably removable, with battery, brake master, and all the other usual goodies under them.

That looks kind of like the Home Depot off of 183 near Lakeline Mall in Austin.

If it is, I bet that is the car I saw parked in a faculty spot at the UT Law School when I was in grad school. If it is not the same one, then there is a guy who also daily drove a model T or something like the one pictured at UT.

Funnily enough, it’s off 183, but State Highway 183 in the DFW Mid-cities area, so probably not the same one. All Home Depot’s look the same. :)
