I have to wonder... given that gaming is a massive industry and has been for decades, who the hell makes these decisions thinking 'this is exactly how we make more money', despite countless examples of this poo poo not working at all? Meanwhile, games like LoL, Fortnite, and the other F2P-pay-only-for-cosmetic-poo poo games are taking the gently caress off (and honestly, good on them!) and making so much money it's obscene.

How can even the money-centric suits at the top of the chain who don't give a poo poo about actual gaming not know how this works now? :psyduck: People, the formula is there, no one really seems to mind, and it's loving working... and you do this bullshit that almost always fails. I just don't get it.

I think that the issue is that the games you named have a lot more to their game play than most of the cash grab stuff on mobile. Plenty of people can play LoL or Fortnite and not drop a dime and still have fun. The decision makers for the other games probably come into the market knowing that most people will burn out on their content fairly fast and the only people that stick around are usually attached to whatever brand/franchise the game has going for it. May as well milk those customers for their cash while they are still around. The only gacha game that I know of that's been going for a long time is Puzzle and Dragons and that one is probably the exception because the puzzle aspect is pretty fleshed out (but it does still have tons of P2W crammed in). I'm sure there are others out there but they all probably have a high rate of incoming players that they churn through fast.

How MMO-y is the game? Like are there going to be 47 other players trying to fight the same boars so we can get 10 boar dicks for a fetch quest?

Its pretty MMO-y. While the resources do seem to be shared, it doesn't appear to ever be a problem (since it respawns real quick).

Did a search and didn't find any results. Recently informed of Archero.

RPG ish, with 10 chapters (so far) ranging from 10-50 levels. Progress through each level killing spawning enemies, upgrading weapons and armor as you go. Free to Play with in app purchases. People complain about the energy rates. But honestly, I can play this for hours when starting with full energy. I find it highly addictive, and well designed. It gets quite challenging if you don't learn to dodge properly. You essentially fire when standing still and stop when moving to dodge fire or contact.

Yeah there are dungeon and group content. Tribe events involve a group take over an island or ship, as well as defending home island with slingshots.
From what I've seen, you level up and unlock skills and than at one point (around level 20 I think?) you unlock a 2nd set of talents which is a different moveset (which also appears to be a different element).

EDIT: I need to drop out of it though. Too many other things going on to be able to get invested in this. Passed lead to Shwqa

So I played on a bit in Warriors of Waterdeep just to see how bad it gets. It gets real bad. So the underlying mechanics are really weak, it's rock/paper/scissors but kinda meaningless as it doesn't make that much difference. The enemies also play by different rules so they can attack you in places where you can never attack them which just adds to the grind. Multiplayer is fundamentally broken, you get 4 heroes a side chosen randomly from all your heroes but the turn sequence is always turn about, not spread amongst the heroes in play. So if you get a hero killed one of your other heroes will just get an extra turn. I won loads of matches from 2 down because it just meant my best hero got more turns and could just murder everyone.

But that's all an aside, the grind that's where the real issues start. So you breeze through the first few levels 1-3 on all your heroes no worries, there's a single player dungeon that you can play through for some rewards and some special events that you get some free shots at. Then you get to lvl 4 and all progress grinds to a halt. So the way your characters level up is by upgrading their gear and clearing rooms. You get 100xp for upgrading equipment and 5xp for clearing a room (at the level I was at). You need 1850xp to take 1 hero from 4->5. You run out of gold really quickly so upgrading gear is out as a strategy so you're left grinding dungeons. Except you can only play the current dungeon, you can't go back through old one , and you cannot complete the one you're in. So you do the first room, everyone gets 5xp and then you get wiped out, you get 5 gold for your trouble as well. Did I mention it costs 175 gold to level up from 4->5 as well? So free playing it takes a week or so of solid grinding to get your heroes 4->5. Now you can clear 2 rooms of the current dungeon so the 5->6 transition will only take 3-4 weeks of grinding the same 2 rooms every single day. Not to mention the gold you need.

If you pay £10 a month for this it would reduce the grind by maybe 50% at most, you'll still be grinding the same rooms over and over again for minor increments. I think it's probably the worst grind I have ever seen in a game.

Yeah I'm just really surprised by the level of polish in Dawn of Isles. The translation is really good, which is good because that's often one of the things that makes me bounce off these games the hardest. That, and a usable UI. It's a little hectic, as with most MMOs, what with all the different tasks and modes to go to, but navigating to quests is easy to do, they're all divided up by color, and everything has tooltips to let you know what's what.

I also really like how gradually the game introduces new concepts. Usually with games like this it's all thrown at you and you're dealing with two dozen things by level 5, but DoI takes its time.

For me it was getting four levels in, getting smashed by everything and having that merchant shoved in my face so I could buy new gear. Maybe I'm just getting socialist in my old age but I don't appreciate being squeezed right off the bat about MTX.

The difficulty curve is horrific and there doesn't seem to be any variety in the equipment, so you can't even specialise your roles. Your tank will get flattened, your cleric takes too long to recover their healing spell and once both of those are down, your mage can't deal enough outright dps to delete the enemies before they flatten them. No meaningful variety in the levels, very little sense of progression. Move or attack is a terrible system that slows the fights to a crawl.

E: also I couldn't see any way of spending the gold earned in mission on anything except upgrades, so if you can't get gloves / boots to drop, you're always short on those stats.

I'm stuck in zone 4, feels like I'm just not strong enough for anything. It takes enough to kill anything that it becomes hard to avoid incidental hits, but each hit does a third of my health. I'm just stuck grinding gear until I can luck into a good run.

I got to a point where I could breeze through zone 4 rooms and used a revive against the boss and reached zone 5 and you basically end up back at the start of the treadmill, in terms of how much damage you take and deal. Just new enemy patterns to learn, and each level / gear upgrade coming in slower.

I am liking this game more than a bunch of the other MMOs I've played on mobile. Been making steady progress and crafting some things along the way. I hope the dungeon difficulty goes up a bit later as it's kind of a cakewalk. I also hoped that my characters would share island progress because as of right now I don't care to make an alt even though it might be nice to try out Fighter.
