In some places the idea that they're worse than rural areas is a laugh. Sometimes as in my state you see more a combo of the bad suburbs (the first type I described) teaming up with the more rural areas to represent the GOP voting base. One could not operate without the other, and they still have some differences. In some cases the lovely type of suburb transitions to better type over time as well. Orange County is the best example of that in 2018.

i was good friends with the son of two libertarians when I was growing up. His dad was once upon a time the candidate for governor in our state for the libertarian party. their house ruled because we could ride 250cc dirt bikes while wearing no protective gear beyond a bicycle helmet at age 10 and we could build trebuchets and poo poo. they were mostly hippies who wanted to be left alone by the government. they were grain farmers. I assume they took advantage of subsidies and crop insurance. i havent seen my friend since we graduated as he now lives in south america with his south American wife. his younger brother lives in Canada with his Canadian wife. I dont know if they held on to their libertarian leanings or if they realized a government-free Neverland was pretty dope for a 10 year old, but society rules and so does helping the needy.
