Half Shuhang's powerset exists solely so White can enjoy some tasty snacks and a drink.

Also the part where Shuhang told Senior White "Hey, I'm glad you like having me around, but if I don't make it to fourth stage I won't have the lifespan to help you out next time you come out of secluded meditation." and Senior White said "Oh no! I hope you make it to fourth, then!" and Shuhang just kind of shrugged and accepted that he was now guaranteed to make it to fourth.

Out of curiosity are there any "stuck in my mmo" stories that do anything interesting with alts? Like maybe they come in as their bank alt instead of their high level hero, or they grumble about being stuck in a low fantasy PvP game instead of flying around city of heroes?

that's pretty much the standard for the many 'stuck in a fantasy world which is inexplicably identical to a mmo the mc played'. they start at low levels and wow onlookers with their strangely encyclopedic knowledge of every quest and npc in the game. the many ways that this makes no sense are never addressed.

iirc in maou-sama retry the main character occasionally busts out his alternate characters in a sort of "transformation sequence" so he can do cool poo poo incognito. Kind of lame but it's something I guess. I've always felt like there was unexplored potential in the "MMO alt" concept. Nowadays there are so many "transported into another world as a video game character" type deals that it really surprises me that there doesn't seem to be any that have taken a crack at expanding on that thought to include alts. Because alts are super ubiquitous, right? Anyone who ever seriously played an MMO and isn't that specific type of personality that is fine with sinking thousands of hours into one character has alts, so it seems like a natural thing to write about... but nobody does. Bit of a pity.

Life Reset is an english LitRPG story on kindle about a dude who gets stuck playing as a goblin boss after leading a large guild and loses his mind. It does have some issues with world building related to how he ends up playing a goblin and why he keeps playing as a goblin, but I found it reasonably entertaining . It's been a while though. There's also a genderbender story about a dude who gets stuck playing his vampire princess, but I never got very far, nor do I remember much of it, including the name. It's a LN, so probably something very literal.

Kind of lame but it's something I guess. At least half the time the author's never actually played an MMO. More than a few series are depicted where players are only allowed to have one character, and if there is any sort of rerolling service it's paid. It's the same reason why so many series have PvP treated as being serious business, with PKers being treated like dangerous psychopaths, instead of it being like "lol let's gank this chob". A lot of the time these series are just made as a way for them to do an isekai but lowering the stakes so it's not a life-and-death struggle. You can tell which series are made by people who actually spent a lot of time playing MMOs and want to write about that because it comes out in their writing. Can we please just have a series that starts with a weak protagonist who has to be clever to get through their problems and stays that way through the entire story? I want to read about harrowing near-death adventures where every advantage has to be fought for and nothing is guaranteed, not thirty chapters of “oh no I’m going to die” and then immediate ascension to godhood.

There's Grimgar? And pretty much every cultivation novel at least pays lip service to the idea of the main character constantly going against powers much stronger than themselves, forcing them to secretly build their power for a few chapters before the face slapping can commence.

Grimgar was mentioned, and I've heard that Re:Zero is basically that. If you want a more traditionally structured martial arts epic, Cradle probably counts, if only because the protagonist is in such a mad rush to reach godhood that he's pretty much always running into people and creatures vastly more powerful than him without adequate prep-time.

He goes down the mountain by avoiding encounters with a big slime (and bandits), and is caught as a suspicious person in the castle he reaches. In interrogation the female knight Ilius met at the imprisoned place, when talking about the bandits seen in the mountain, Irias, who was stuck in the search for said bandits, hurriedly strikes the bandits. My wish to be a brave man, or to build a harem? "I just want to live in a safe place" - a story that such a man survives the different world with "Understanding" as a weapon! (en-AU) So this dude got ripped out of his original world and chucked up into the mountains, he's a bog-standard average gently caress with zero ability beyond the standard logic circuit. Somehow he's a Hero, though he's as weak as a bug. The only thing he gets is the ability to understand language... and he doesn't even start with it. What the gently caress happened to make him like this? I mean he has near zero magic and the only thing he can do is talk... maybe. The Other World Weak gently caress starts his journey! No harems! Just understanding what the gently caress is going on around him!

I want to read about harrowing near-death adventures where every advantage has to be fought for and nothing is guaranteed, not thirty chapters of “oh no I’m going to die” and then immediate ascension to godhood. Someone mentioned Grimgar (though that's less "being clever" and more "being careful and diligent"). Someone also mentioned Cradle, where this description fits for the first 2-3 books (after that the protagonist finally reaches a level where he can engage in fights directly, but having gone through several books being weak makes it feel like more of an accomplishment). Successful Businessmanga posted:I don't have the quote immediately to hand, but Yrsillar has said as much about Renxiang's inspiration in the original Forge of Destiny thread. There's a small scattering of mentions as to who is a reference to what if you go digging around. One thing I realized recently that may or may not be intentional is that Ji Rong has a similar aesthetic to Killua, with being a guy with a short/compact build who uses electricity and now has techniques to turn himself into electricity. We'll have to see if he starts using a yo-yo as a weapon. Avulsion posted:Sun Liling fights in clothes made out of her blood and leads an insurrection against the student government. There are several inspirations there I think. A lot of stuff doesn't fit the Ryuko comparison (she is very clearly and directly stronger than Cai Renxiang and looks very different), and as someone said her appearance is very similar to female Ranma, and she also has Gae Bolg from F/SN for some reason lol It's kinda funny when those things show up in FoD; I'd normally be annoyed at that sort of thing, but the author has shown himself fully capable of creating original characters/abilities so it's just kind of interesting when they pop up

The breakdowns are at least different and result in different types of character growth, and in the fourth arc there's a ton of neat plot stuff interspersed throughout. In arc 4 I think the frequency of deaths is a lot lower than the earlier arcs; I remember multiple times when I expected him to die and restart, but it kept going for much longer. Though there is one seriously uncomfortable to read death (anyone who has read it will probably know what I'm talking about - the rabbits). I'm looking forward to the anime adaptation, because arc 4 is some seriously top tier stuff IMO. I haven't read arc 5 yet, aside from the first handful of chapters, so I don't know how it compares.

When I switched I didn't mind. The biggest thing to get used to is the forum format, but you can also look at some of the arguments that decided which direction would be taken and the dice rolls are embedded which makes combat encounters make more sense.
