Welcome one and all to this, the 13th update.

Previously, we unleashed the (Phantom) beast(s) from the Research Facility, which gave Saber enough time to come to terms with what they are.

We also found some new Espers, and an old party member to equip them on!

Of these, a handful of spells are useful. Dispel, Osmose, Haste 2, and Rasp. Pearl is nice but I have it as a regular command already. Dispel can be used on an enemy to get rid of any positive magical effects. Osmose will drain a large chunk of MP from the enemy and usually completely refill whoever cast it. Haste 2 just makes everyone faster and Rasp will drain a decent amount of MP without giving it to anyone. If I get desperate, I can use it to kill something that Dies At 0 MP which I can't otherwise hurt. Warp actually is useful to escape battles and dungeons but I have a bunch of Warp Stones anyway (after this dungeon, at least).

This is our party for this chunk, replacing Pipimi with Saber. They has all those wonderful dances!

Onward, grand steed!

Our first stop is Narshe. Everyone has a brief wordless meeting and then we go try to lockpick that last chest in the treasure room. Except there is a wolf! Oh no!

Unhand that monkey!

gently caress the monkey, gimme that.

YOINK!

Ribbons are great. They block the following status effects: Dark, Zombie, Poison, Imp, Petrify, Mute, Berserk, Muddle, Seizure, and Sleep. Notably, this does NOT include the follow statuses: Clear, Doom, Image, Condemned, Slow, Stop or Freeze.

They're not actually something you might want to have on all the time. They can be very handy for certain fights to completely neuter an opponent.

Hop skip and a jump to the Cave of the Sealed Gate.

I just noticed I forgot to document these monsters from the Magitek Facility. The only notable things are their Morphs. BehemothSuits are fantastic and while Gold Hairpins are good, they're much less useful in BC and especially with dancingmaduin. Actual magic users that don't have another useful ability are fairly rare.

I hate puzzles that are just time wasters. I also hate these colors.

Memento Ring does still have Death protection! That evade negative is garbage. Even still, a Memento Ring or Safety Bit in a perma death run is one of the best pieces of gear you can get.

...Huh. Decided to generate a new seed after hearing about this (in speedcave mode), and wound up with Edgar turning into a Runic Berserker. Who happens to be a Cactuar. That'd mess up basically any plans ever. Recruitable party members also include a baby and a treasure chest (yes, I used the "silly sprites" code).

And now I'm wondering if the dev(s) would consider adding some sort of "force Ragnarok command" code for people who want that. I mean, they already have a code that makes you basically invincible and another that sets all enemies' HP to 1; "guarantee someone has a spammable Ragnarok summon" actually seems less cheat-y than those two, and could make a decent gimmick run in the vein of the "everyone is Sabin and suplexes everything" code. Or you could make it a bit more general and make it "summoner mode" instead: Everyone has a random summoning command, possibly with a randomized specific summon each.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go re-generate until I get a Ragnarok command, because I wanna try that.

I actually had NO IDEA about those treasures until a few weeks ago and so I never got them. According to the log file, the items in the cave I missed: AutoCrossbow, Mithril Pike, Flash, Trident.

Nothing impressive.

Well, I technically don't have a Ragnarok command, but R-Esper (the random summon thing I mentioned before) and W-Death (2 random instakills) work well enough; only catches are Crusader and Roulette, respectively, assuming they have their standard targeting. As a bonus, Ragnarok's one of the common results on W-Death!

As to weird party members... Locke wound up as Kirby (presumably from Dreamland), Cyan is a baby, Shadow is a 3-ton weight, Edgar is a door, Sabin is a chair (furniture brothers!), Strago is a treasure chest, Setzer is a grave, Mog is a skeleton, Gau is a potato, and Gogo is Chupon. Lot weirder than that other seed I mentioned, especially if their colors're strange.

I can also potentially access the Rage command this time (not directly, but there're 7 items that turn Capture into Rage when equipped), so that's a thing. On the other hand, no dancer. Meh.

Let us know what gets thrown off the balcony, okay?

Anyway, minor update: The person with R-Esper is Sabin; while he has the Magic command, he also started with a grand total of 2 MP (good thing Leather Hats reduce MP costs). Umaro, meanwhile, is an EXCEPTIONALLY deadly White Mage due to winding up with the W-Death command (even if his other command is redundant trash due to chaining Golem into X-Fer; I can X-Fer just fine with W-Death, and Golem's kinda useless when it's followed up by an instakill). Kinda wish that Ragnarok worked more often (in both senses of the phrase), but when you can just casually annihilate entire groups it's no big loss.

Also, the first chest I opened was a Genji Shield. This isn't nearly as good as it sounds due to the fact that it comes with Auto-Stop.

Have you tried GolemX-Fer yet? Sometimes with skills like that, it'll do the beneficial part to your target then the other part to the enemy.

Also I wonder if RunningShoes would counteract the Auto-Stop.

No, haven't tried that yet. Probably won't, either, since I got my rear end kicked so hard I basically rage-quit.

And the RunningShoes thing would require me to find some first; there are no shops that I've seen, and even if they exist they're not guaranteed to have any.

This is a town made up of Baby Boomers. They prospered for years with the magic handed to them and now they keep it all to themselves and get mad at anyone else that calls them out.

With this many monster sprites in the game, I wonder what the odds are of getting a palette swap in the same location are. Two locations actually, as both bears could also appear in the Sealed Gate. The Uncoct are somehow casting a shadow in midair but really, at this point, I don't question much.

I never go through this dungeon without breezing past Relm/Touko like they aren't even there. It's the small things in life.

Saber gets to boogying, using my best available healing.

Wooooo, Rem bringing the (non-elemental) thunder with that 44 Magic Power.

Ultros was pretty complacent this whole fight; makes chewing through that 25k HP much easier.

A supposed small child drops out of nowhere, WuFei breaks the 4th wall and Saber resorts to punching Ultros. I..don't think combat works that way, Saber.

Since I don't have Sketch, I still have to kill Ultros like normal. Unfortunately Touko is near worthless here. They have a few spells available as they are a natural mage but nothing super helpful. Tapir does stuff:

code:
Recovers from Blind, Zombie, Poison, Imp, Petrify, Doom, Silence, Berserk, Confuse, Seizure, Sleep, Slow, and Stop. Targets afflicted with Sleep will have their HP and MP fully restored, even if the target is undead.
There is also a bug with it; if the character affected doesn't have Sleep status, it displays a "Miss". It still heals all that stuff at least.

Whirlwind is still near useless.

As I was saying, Touko is pretty worthless this fi- oh.

God damned miser!

"I did it!" Touko says, hoping the party ignores her middling stats.

The only good things here are +1 Speed and +1 Magic Power.

Touko's knees have to hurt casting like that all the time.

Sometimes, Whirlwind is OK I guess.

Spewing insults, pissing off all your neighbors, betraying your allies, backing out of treaties and accords, and generally screwing over the global environment?
ALL PART OF MY BRILLIANT STRATEGY!
Whenever I consider restarting my own randomizer run I always remember I'm at the Banon part and holy hell most randomized setups force that one to be full of pre-raft grinding. I wish there was a flag that kept Banon, specifically, from being randomized, just so you had some vaguely reliable healing for that part.

Use your Tonics that you definitely bought 99 of at some point and certainly would never have forgotten to buy.

Oh you want AoE healing? Too bad.

I was actually planning to call my run on the river since I couldn't out-DPS Orthos before he could kill my party (and I had no healing, and no real way to get some for that party), but then I learned that one of my tools became Fire 3 and that insta-killed him

Good work!

Except for calling him Orthos, that name should never have existed. :argh:

Hello again friends! Today we're going to get what's coming to us.

This loot that is inexplicably still unlocked!

Total Collection:
Man Eater
6900 GP
Cure Ring x2
Blossom
Super Ball
Amulet
Elixir
RunningShoes
Crystal Shld
Magicite
Imp's Armor

Of the things that are new, the Cure Ring is kind of OK, the RunningShoes are useless, Imp Armor is also useless, and the Crystal Shield is pretty nice. The Super Ball is weird; it targets all enemies with random damage.

code:
The amount of damage is random, dealing a random multiple of 256 damage up to a total of 8192 damage.

The formula is as follows:

256×Random[1...32]
I don't think I've ever used one.

I go to the Veldt to pick up some Lores from Rages I know. See if you can guess which one is the best. A hint: it restores HP to the party equal to the caster's current HP.

I like the Auction House, it's just a shame how limited it is.

Two peas in a pod here. Zoneseek gives everyone Shell, Golem absorbs physical attack damage up to the caster's max HP. It covers the entire party but only up to that total.

Zoneseek is currently unequipable which is a shame as +2 Speed and Ice 3 sound delicious. Golem only has Rasp as a decent use and only Taiga can even equip it.

Garbage.

loving new money.

This guy sells you Sraphim for a lot of money. If you wait until the World of Ruin it only costs 10 GP. I bought it anyway. Life 2 is a big help and Osmose will do in a pinch, as it drains MP and gives it to the caster.

I went and checked out Triangle Island, where Intangr usually hangs.

Overcast loving sucks. It gives you a real short timer and when that runs out, whoever got hit becomes a Zombie. It is unblockable but can miss, and apparently a Revivify won't fix you after you become a Zombie!

Pipimi went Z on us and Taiga stayed in that terrible Rage that did 600 damage on a physical but Minori kept pumping out the Bolt 3 and Goku helped with ?-Geo.

Strangely, it only used Seize. Which only works on one person at a time. I'll hazard a guess that it can't do anything else while Seizing.

This pleases Taiga.

GOTTA GO!

Not good.

Editor's Note: If you're reading this in the future on the Let's Play Archive or similar, I held a vote in the thread. The consensus was to create a completely new seed with the code that starts you in the World of Ruin. I did this to have more thread engagement and because it was boring to just retell what happened from the videos I made months ago. That is why everything in the future will be different. Now you're all caught up in time for the World of Ruin!

Hey. Have a seat, let's talk.

I've learned a lot about running an LP. Or at least, I feel like I have. And we just reached a wonderful breaking point in this game. I've learned that playing the entire game ahead of time, with no input from anyone reading, can get very boring. Probably for you, definitely for me. So I propose a solution. Version 3.1 of Beyond Chaos is out. There is a code that let's you start in the World of Ruin without playing through the WoB at all.

I'm going to present three options for the thread to vote on.

Option 1: Continue the LP as it is. I have all the video recorded already, it would just involve going through and taking screenshots then writing things up, as I've done so far.

Option 2: I remake the rom. I use the same seed number and the same codes, with the addition of "worringtriad" to start us in the World of Ruin. I did this and compared the text files; the only things that stay the same are character/monster names and the available commands. Stats, treasures, dances, espers, sprites, music, all of that is different.

Option 3: I completely remake the rom. Brand new seed with the same codes, and edited to have names match the character they were before. Or just new names, who cares? EVERYTHING will be newly randomized. This does include "worringtriad" as well.

Of the options I like 2 some, and 3 the best. If you want in game justification, the world has just been shattered and remade. Things are different now. People change. The "worringtriad" code gives me all the treasure from the WoB that can't still be found. I'll be short a few espers but they're easily gotten again. Items will likely have different effects. Option 3 will give us new and varied commands. However I would not be playing the game until I'm ready to make an update. This also means the thread will get to vote on who I bring with me and where I go (when possible), leading to more engagement with everyone. You like engagement right?

This wouldn't mean the initial run is lost forever. I would still do mini updates with it, at parts where it would be appropriate. What Gogo/Umaro are like, certain espers, some boss battles, a SUPER SECRET THING OR TWO.

Please make your voice heard with a BOLDED vote for the option you would prefer. My personal preference is NOT the first option but if the thread wills it, that's what we'll do. Please feel free to ask any clarifying questions before you vote if you like.

Spewing insults, pissing off all your neighbors, betraying your allies, backing out of treaties and accords, and generally screwing over the global environment?
ALL PART OF MY BRILLIANT STRATEGY!
Option 2

I prefer it to Option 3 because(I assume that would still be with worringtriad on) a lot of the fun of new runs is seeing how incongruous the new sprites look in the various intro/first encounter sequences, like if Relm is a burly man or Sabin is a dog or something.

Option 3, since I refuse to acknowledge a Shadow Goku that isn't a potato.

I too am leaning towards option 3

I edited the post to clarify. Options 2 and 3 both include "worringtriad" so that I will start in the World of Ruin. The main difference in Option 3 is that EVERYTHING will be different (except the names that I will edit back in) whereas Option 2 keeps the same commands for everyone.

Yeah, Option 3 sounds good to me. With new names, so we don't confuse them with the thread's first seed characters.

Did any of you know that the World of Ruin wasn't even in the initial design for FF6? Read about it here.

Also, I guess if you have a preference for new names or keep the old names, put that in your vote also. I'm still learning stuff, like how polls work. I'm very much an adult with a brain.

I love the fact that Edward (sorry, Taiga) is actually useful in one game that he's in, but if you like Option 3, then Option 3.

I mean you could keep Taiga/Edward yeah, but maybe he won't be useful anymore :V

I'll leave the voting up today and overnight, sometime tomorrow morning I'll figure up the final tally. There aren't a whole lot of choices to be made in the WoR before you get the Airship. I think the only things you don't have to do are visit Terra and rescue Sabin? On a side note, if anyone didn't read the change log, character locations are randomized in the latest version. You'll still find A character in a given location but WHICH character that is is randomized, besides a few that have to remain for programming purposes. I think you always start with whoever Celes is, for example.

I'm so in for Option 3.

I have learned the hard way that if you roll a useless Celes with no good commands and mediocre equipment options, the first part of the WoR really sucks. Especially since you are pretty much forced to skip whichever character is in Tzen, alt-Celes will not survive the Burning House.

There are two things I scan the spoiler .txt file for when I generate a new seed: I want someone to have the Rage command, and I want whatever replaces Celes to be at least survivable alone.

'Course, there was the time I didn't realize until it was too late that it was the Storm Drgn/Forest Suite skill called 'Rage', not Gau's Rage command.....

Remember that whatever Kamog has equipped during the Moogle scenario at the beginning is dumped into your inventory at the beginning of the WoR. That can also make or break a seed if your Celes is bad.
