"Say you have a ham sandwich. Guy comes over to you and says 'hey, I got a shiny gold coin I'll trade for that sandwich'. Another guy comes along, and he has a bottle of fresh, filtered, drinkable water. Which one is more valuable?'"

The proper solution is to split the sandwich and water, have a nice lunch with your new wasteland friend, then beat the chud and take his gold. I dunno why the guy didn't float that idea.

But wouldn't gold be totally worthless in a wasteland scenario, thus making the chud atually poor? :thunk:

My boomer mother had her brain broken by the internet and made the rational decision to pull all her retirement investments to get a generator, some solar panels, a safe, and a bunch of silver bars (for the apocalypse). You see, she'll just use the silver to keep living the high life when the anarchist punks take over.

I asked her if I could see her silver. When she opened the safe I pocketed it all. When she asked for it back I said no. When she got very upset I gave it back. I think the lesson may have been lost on her.

Anyway, she's broke now and survives off abnb and uber income and is absolutely hosed for retirement. But that doesn't really matter because she's 63 with limited mobility but the rapture will be any day now!

E: and, yes, she hates immigrants specifically South American ones. She lives in Canada. She was born in war torn Europe and he parents fled for better prospects and she got to live a relatively comfortable life as a result.

Following up on that Tennessee rural health care article from earlier, here's a bit from today's Krugman column, comparing Tennessee (which hasn't accepted the Medicaid expansion in the ACA) with Kentucky (which has):

quote:

According to a Georgetown University study that covered a seven-year period spanning the introduction of the A.C.A., the percentage of low-income rural adults without health insurance fell 27 points in Kentucky, only six points in Tennessee.

...

And we’re not just talking about having insurance; we’re talking about whether there are doctors and hospitals available to provide care. True, rural hospitals have been closing in many states as the nonmetropolitan population declines. But a project that tracks rural hospital closings since 2010 finds that a great majority have taken place in states that didn’t expand Medicaid. Four rural hospitals have closed in California, but 17 have closed in Texas. Tennessee has had three times as many closings as Kentucky.

Mr Interweb posted:

An interesting thing I learned was that, although I knew the South has always been kind of lovely, I didn't realize HOW lovely it was in terms of providing services for their people. Pretty much all the hospitals that are present in the south are entirely the result of the New Deal. Without federal intervention, there would be almost no reason for doctors to be in many of these areas in the first place.

Good thing that there hasn't been a multi-decade soft propaganda campaign to make white people throughout the country identify with and seek to emulate the South!

RPG.net used to be really bad at tolerating all kinds of nonsense (under the typical conflict-averse nerdlinger belief in freeze peach and 'fairness' and 'open-mindedness'), but over the last few years they've gotten their act together and made MAGA and Trump and gamerrgate support and all that other garbage bannable.

they gave really good reasons too, in the thread where they announced they were doing this they got a lot of the typical "why do we have to have politics in my hobby? why don't you just ban all political discussion? you're excluding conservative viewpoints! this isn't fair and balanced!" type responses and universally replied "we are not interested in balance. we have chosen to protect minorities and oppressed classes specifically by excluding people whose "political" views delegitimize their right to exist. we are explicitly choosing a side, here" and it warmed my heart

I stopped posting on rpg.net several years ago (probably the better part of a decade at this point) mostly because of the conflict averse permissive nonsense. If someone is being a poo poo and talking nonsense you don't tiptoe around trying make some sort of argument, you just tell them to gently caress off. Glad to hear that they improved, though I'm never going back because I mostly list interest in rpgs.

I mean that's not entirely wrong, gold has value in and of itself, it can be used for things, dollars only have value so long as they are backed the US Government, there are paper currencies which have had value and then had none, so you can see how they get this stupid idea and run with it, because of course, it has a smidgeon of truth to it.

Maybe recommend they look into Dinar revaluation.

Gold also has an inherent weakness in that science may render it obsolete for electronics as they develop new materials.
It could very well go the way of diamonds and end up being an entirely artificial value with a few industrial uses.
