I don’t understand how this child made a connection to this person at all. OP had a stepdad but that relation fell apart. Former stepdad moves on to either have a new son or take on a younger stepson. Did I miss something???

I doubt the child of someone described as an ex-stepfather is considered a relative by OP. I certainly don’t. Reading between the lines it sounds like OP is transferring issues about ex-stepdad to the kid, who they may not have even ever met. (Edit: yeah that kid is described as ‘ former stepfather's new stepson’, so this might even be the kid of someone who contributed to him being a former stepparent) This thing sounds obnoxious and dumb and is definitely an ripoff elf on the shelf piece of crap for profit thing that I would do for my kid in a second or begrudgingly for a child of a relative, even one I had little or no relationship with, but if I didn’t like or care about the parent I wouldn’t.
